25 years of Promising Pals
Last Friday, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Promising Pals program at the James P. Timilty Middle School. Over 280 Simmons alumnae/i, staff, faculty and graduate students participated in this pen pal mentoring program. It was awesome to see the tremendous presence the of the Simmons community at the breakfast where the pals get to meet in person (overall there are close to 675 middle school students each with an adult pal). Simmons President Helen Drinan, Mayor Tom Menino and Superintendent of Boston Public Schools Carol Johnson were recognized along with Scott/Ross Center staff members.
There was tremendous energy and excitement among pals. Simmons alumnae/i reported that it was a wonderful opportunity to make a connection to a middle school student along with exposure to a Boston Public School. Many pals are already eager for next year's program to start.
Of course this all could not happen without the participation of the Simmons community. We are thrilled to have so many people connected with Simmons interested in volunteering in Promising Pals. I also have to recognize the hard work of Laura Melkonian GS '12 who served as the Simmons Promising Pals Coordinator this year. Her hard work, cheerful attitude and amazing organization skills helped the 25th anniversary to be truly special for all involved. Thanks Laura!
