Social Security

It is a legal requirement that all employed persons, including students, have a social security number in order to be eligible to work. In order to apply for a Social Security number, you will need to have a valid job offer. You will then need to apply for a Social Security number at the Social Security Office located in the O'Neill Federal Building in downtown Boston (10 Causeway St., Room 148, 1st floor, Boston, MA 02222; phone number: 1-800-772-1213). The O'Neill Federal Building is adjacent to North Station on the Green and Orange MBTA subway line.

  • Employment evidence letter from international student advisor
  • I-20
  • I-94
  • Passport and visa
For students applying for an on-campus job

When you have an on-campus job offer, please ask your on-campus employer to fill out this letter, obtain signature from your adviser and bring it

Step 1: Ask your supervisor to fill out Evidence of Employment letter and sign

Step 2: Bring the signed letter to the international office for the final signature

Step 3: Go to a social security office with the following documents

  • Evidence of Employment
  • Passport
  • I-20
  • I-94
For F-1 students on CPT
In order to apply for a Social Security number you will need to bring your passport with the I-94, Visa, and your I-20 indicating your CPT authorization.
For students on OPT
In order to apply for a Social Security number you will need to bring your passport with the I-94 and Visa, your I-20 indicating your OPT authorization and your EAD card.
