Director of Health Education, Priyanka Jain, will now take your questions

jain2.jpgHow did you get into Health Education?
I originally was a dentist back in India. However, after some time I started to miss interacting with people about health issues and prevention topics. I realized I wanted to be more involved with public health, and that is what led me into Health Education.

What is your favorite part of Simmons?
I love that everyone is very caring and looks out for each other. Great support here!

What is your favorite TV show?
I loved Friends when I was growing up. I also like science fiction shows like Terra Nova. However, I do not like the local news. I don't understand why a cat climbing up a tree is such a big deal!

What is your favorite type of food?
I love Thai food! One of my favorite Thai dishes is called the Budda Feast because it has all different types of vegetables mixed with rice and ginger.

What type of music do you listen to?
I like to listen to a little of everything. I love Bon Jovi and Brian Adams. I actually competed in a singing competition back in India to win Brian Adams concert tickets. It was funny because I was the only person who knew all the lyrics to one of the songs and that's why I won.

jain4.jpgWhat was life like in India?
I had a very supportive family composed of my mother, father, brother, and sister. Life was very protected and safe and everything was taken care of. I was told to get an education and that is what I did. My life was not like 'Slumdog Millionaire,' despite what Hollywood tells Americans. I feel that people need to open their minds and explore the world on their own in order to understand it. Americans should travel to countries like India in order to see what it is like rather than rely on mass media to do it for them.

What is your least favorite part of the U.S?
I guess my least favorite part of the US would have to be that it's a very nuclear society and people keep to themselves most of the time. I come from a place where everyone knows their neighbors and families and here I don't even know my own neighbors. I like that people are very independent but I do miss that aspect of community support.

What is one thing you miss from India?
My mother and the rest of my family.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to run, watch sports like tennis and basketball, and just relax.

What would you want students to know about you?
I love what I do. If there's anything I can help with, my door and heart are always open. I also want to students to get more involved with Health Education and to be a part of groups like Betsy's Friends, Body Project, and Drugs and Alcohol. There's so much students can do with Health Education here at Simmons.
