Sandy Lor for SGA President!

I am a strong believer in embracing and increasing diversity, being inclusive, building community, and advocating for equality; all of which was part of my presidential campaign (DICE, Diversity, Inclusive, Community, Equality). I will take these strong values to help lead Simmons College to raise its awareness and celebrate each other in our community.

Like Minds Retreat

This past weekend, I had the great opportunity to participate in the Like Minds Retreat at Camp Coby in New Hampshire. Like Minds, an organization on campus lead by student leaders, promotes conversations and discussions for diversity and inclusion. We...

Internship at the Forsyth Institute!

I began interning in the summer and I have already learned so many new things about tooth development as well as new lab techniques! I am updating my wiki lab space page from Dr. Richard Gurney's Organic Chemistry courses and putting in new protocols I have learned. Last week I observed a post-doc extract teeth from a wild type mice and analyze teeth development stages. The teeth were so small it made it difficult to believe that it was real!

Panera Bread..Nom Nom Nom

Can you believe it's almost October? It's unbelievable. I don't even know what date it is. Although this semester is off to a full swing, I am quite nervous because all of my big assignments seem to be during one...

Class Council's first event of the semester!

Staff from Facilities enjoyed ice cream during an ice cream social held by Class Council 2014 . Class council meets Junior year! This year feels much different than the last two, though. Why, you may ask? Well, as first-years,...

Summer of a Simmons Student!

Summer is over and I have officially started this semester as a junior! What did I spend my summer doing in preparation for junior year? I think I photo tour will help summarize my productive, yet fun summer! Take a...

Senior Year!

It is the first full week of classes of my fall semester! Five classes, four which are English is a bit intimidating but I think I got this! Lots of friends are in my classes, and I'm so glad my...

International students!

So many international students have been running around the residence campus, from Spain and France I think! It's been interesting to see younger students on campus! Besides that, I've been enjoying Whale Watching cruises, speed boats, Cirque Du Soleil and...

It's getting hot, hot, hot! =]

It is officially the first day of summer! The weather is finally looking up after months of absolute nonsense weather! I took my first trip to Revere Beach, and although when I went it was a bit chilly, it was...

Summaa time!

Summer has officially begun for me! I'm working both of my jobs, and taking a summer class to stay on track with graduating a year early. I had an amazing weekend at the Pride Parade, and was able to finally...

The Re-start of My Art!

I used to get lost in a painting and be able to relieve any stress I had with every brush stroke and lately, I haven't been able to feel that satisfaction of completing a master piece of stress or emotions. You know what? I have four more weeks in Ann Arbor and I may as well take advantage of the beautiful campus. What the heck! I'm going to start sketcing! I will post up my latest artwork if you're interested in seeing what I come up with. Do you have any suggestions of what I should paint?

I'm Literally Going to Dental School!

Our days have consisted of guest lecturers, a lot of reading, studying, and testing! In a strange way, I feel like I am a dental student right now; and that the things that I am learning, the way I am dressed (there's a dress code), the way that my days are structured, are similar to that of a dental student's daily activity. This really inspires me. Every day, when I walk into the University of Michigan Dental building I think, "wow, I'm actually literally going to Dental School". It's very refreshing but I know that I cannot lose my focus and I must remember what I need to accomplish before I can daydream that far into my future; which is scoring a competitive DAT (standardized test) score.

Flight to UMichigan for Pre-dental Summer Program!

My flight from Boston was scheduled to depart at 10:25 AM but of course, my dad being...well, being my dad, made us leave our home at 4 o'clock AM! Along with an early commute to the airport, I had mistakenly forgotten my flight information, thinking I would just be able to print my information when I got to the airport. However, I forgot to check which airlines I was flying with, which determined the terminal my dad would have to take me to.

SGA hosts LRC & Inducts New E-board

Simmons College Leadership Recognition Ceremony is an event at Simmons hosted by the Student Government Association where students leaders are recognized. This year's theme was "Student Celebrating Students" and it is one of my favorite events at Simmons!

Finals Week

Two more days of classes, and then the finals week finally begins! It's amazing how time has flown this semester, even though it was definitely one of the hardest I've ever been through. Luckily, I will be continuing at both...

American Student Government Association Conference in Philadelphia!

A presenter talked about branding SGA on campus. One of his (more radical) idea was to create a charity/community service event where the SGA Executive-Board would wear business attire to the event, strip down to the underwear's, SPRINT back to their dorm and at the same time wear SGA under wears that say "SGA...We've got you covered"! This blew everyone's mind.

ACS conference in San Diego, California

ACS stands for American Chemical Society. This year, the Simmons Chemistry and Physics department allowed ten students to go to San Diego to present their research projects. Luckily I was part of this group. It was my first time...

Guess who's graduating a year early?!

I just found out that I am officially graduating with my bachelors in May 2013. This is insane! I'm terrified, and so many questions of whether I should go to Grad. school, or work, or take a year off,...

Dinner at President Drinan's House!

Above: Helen Drinan, President of Simmons College. I was so honored and excited to have been invited to our college President Helen Drinan's home for dinner this past Monday, March 27, 2012. Myself, along with 15 other students, and...

Alternative Spring Break: Boston Immersion

I had an amazing spring break! Simmons' Scott/Ross center once again set up a great program to spend spring break volunteering around Boston. The name of the program was Boston Immersion, and I got to work with students of the...

Above: the beautiful display! Today, Friday March 16, 2012, was the Spring Induction Ceremony for Beta Beta Beta (Tri-Beta), the National Biological Honor Society! The ceremony was held in the Management Building and in attendance were Simmons students, Simmons...

Gateway Mentoring

Mentoring means a great deal to me. I can honestly say that without my mentors in my life, I wouldn't be able to achieve all that I have today. I had a great mentor throughout my high school years, who is still one of my great mentors, Mr. Richard Vaughn, that guided me towards my goals and helped encourage me when I needed it the most. Mr. Vaughn introduced me to new opportunities and he challenged me to take a risk with what I wanted to do. He was my inspiration to creating a mentoring program like Gateway Mentoring. I know what it is like to feel lost and want to succeed and if I can ever have an impact in another student and be even a small percentage of what Mr. Vaughn was to me to another student, then this program would definitely have been successful and worth all the hard work!; Maybe someday, they too can help another person and help guide them to their goals. :)

Alternative Spring Break

Over the past week, during my Spring Break, I had the privilege to travel to Waynesburg, PA to build a home for a family in need alongside Habitat for Humanity. My friend and I led 12 other women on...

I have officially started working at BOTH of my internships. I love them both, and I'm sure the work-load will be a bit stressful to start off, but I know I can handle it! Another exciting thing is that I...

The Clothesline Project

On Wednesday, February 1st, I attended the 20th Annual Clothesline Project after the SGA forum. My friend, Sasha P (who was also in the Simmons World Challenge class) helped organize this event. It was such an emotional event and I wanted to take the time to share this with you if you missed it.

Beginning of a Great Semester!

My winter break was a blast! I went back to my sweet home Guadeloupe. The weather was amazing (almost 100degrees everyday), I was happy to see my family again, and finally I played a lot of tennis to stay...

SCVB Workouts!

Conditioning and Training hard for Volleyball Season 2012 In about a week I will begin to train with the Simmons College Volleyball (SCVB) team in agilities, cardio, and certainly more techniques during a LEAP class offered through the Simmons gym....

Simmons World Challenge

When we arrived on Monday, we immediately began by volunteering our services at the Pine Street Inn. Pine Street Inn was a real eye opener for many students and it was a great way to begin the course with an open mind. We were asked to serve dinners at the men's side of the inn and at first, I was sort of nervous. My parents always taught me to avoid "homeless" people on the streets because they can be dangerous, but right at that moment, I was confronted with the truth;

Bye-Bye Wisdom Teeth!

Tomorrow morning my wisdom teeth are officially leaving my mouth!!! I'm going under anesthesia, so I'm super nervous and a little bit scared about the pain involved, but hey, I'm British, we're tough right?! Yeah, not so much! So, I'll...

Start of the semester :)

Two more days until the beginning of the semester!!!!!!! It's unbelievable how fast time is flying! But these past two weeks I was in the most amazing class of my life at Simmons called World Challenge and it was to...

Back at Simmons!

I got back to Simmons this Monday!!! I'm taking a class over this break for empowering women in poverty, and it's been extremely draining but quite an amazing experience! The weather is absolutely bi-polar; one day it's freezing and the...

Winter planning...

I feel like often times, I have to look back at the person I was when I was a little girl because that girl I knew, had so much passion and determination. And it's not to say that I don't have motivation, it's just that sometimes, I lose sight of what I really want and get distracted. My older sister, Chaoy, told me that college is an experience that I can use to learn how to put distractions aside and just focus. I believe that is something I have been struggling with this semester and I hope I can learn the tricks on how to do it soon!

Swimming & Diving wins GNAC Championships!

The swimming and diving team won the GNAC CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!!! Once again we did it...it has been a tradition for 8 years now. The more I look at how we do in our sports conferences the better I get what...

Crime Scene Investigator: Museum of Fine Arts

As I mention frequently in my previous blogs, I've always enjoyed drawing and painting as a child. The arts allowed me to express myself in a way I felt that I couldn't do otherwise and as I grew up, I began to develop an interest in the sciences and the chemistry of life. Now that I am a college student, I want to seek a career that fits my interests. It was never brought to my attention that there was a field dedicated to the arts and sciences until I began working with Dr. Leonard Soltzberg, who is currently retired, in the Simmons College Chemistry labs.

Last week of Fall Semester

The last week of classes is approaching quickly and it's finally settling in that I really have to buckle down and get all these essays and finals over with! I got accepted into World Challenge, so I wont have much of a Christmas break this year, but that's fine. I'm really excited to take this class, and hopefully the week at home will rejuvenate me.

An extra festive Thanksgiving!

My sister and I at the wedding! Every November, I eagerly anticipate Thanksgiving break because of the delicious food and down time at home with family and friends! This Thanksgiving was filled with great food, and time with the...

Life!

Two years ago, on our way back from a long night of work, I was expressing all my thoughts to my mom about all the possible reasons for my existence (I wasn't holding back). She thought I was crazy! Yes, you might think that I am crazy too but, I think that sometimes I just want solid reasons why things happen and I just want to know what will happen in the future and why things happen the way they do. Maybe I just want answers. I want to know what's the right thing to do and what I should be doing right now to fulfill my purpose of life; Don't we all though, or is it just me?

Black Friday

It was thanksgiving break, and a friend of mine from New Jersey came to visit. I had planned to stay in to do homework, but I ended up walking in the dazzling streets of Boston. I experienced Black Friday!...

First jump.

It's been a long time since I have written, and a lot has happened since. The most exciting is that I finally joined the Simmons swimming team.

Thanksgiving Break!

This Thanksgiving Break is a hard one for me. I got the news today that my grandfather has about 24 hours to live, and I haven't seen him since July. He really was the best man that I have met,...

Quality time with friends this weekend!

As everyone is busy getting ready to go home for Thanksgiving, I'm glad I was able to hang out with my friends on Friday and Saturday before we all leave for a few days. After all my classes and physics...

¬°Voy a Espana!

Last spring semester, I took Spanish 101 and I am currently taking Spanish 102. This summer, I hope to study abroad in Spain with the Simmons traveling course to fulfill my last required Spanish language course. Every time someone talks about his or her travels around the world, I feel so jealous, wondering: Why can't I travel?

Student Government Association; Judiciary Cabinet

Our next JCAB meeting will be in two weeks, November 16th, 2011 from 3:00-5:30 pm in Management Building M201. The main focus of our meeting deals with a lot of new organization presentations and constitution review. The following clubs/interest groups have expressed interest in presenting to become an organization.

Skydiving!

I went skydiving this morning!!!!! It was the scariest thing I have ever even imagined. My parents drove down and surprised me for my birthday (Monday)! Anyway, I can't even hear out of my ears! I was up 14,000 feet...

Happy to be home for Eid!

Picture above: my sister, my brother, and I dressed up for Eid last year! I'm always super excited and happy when I come home from college to spend time with my family, but this time it's extra special because...

A Sun Shower

This cold, rainy, windy weather appropriately reflects this time period every fall semester. And it definitely doesn't help to make it any easier. All you want to do is stay in your warm comfy bed but you know that there...

Finally the weekend....

These past weeks have been really busy. Most of us have been having midterms and pulling all-nighters. Fortunately, the professors try to make the best out of our learning experience and make sure we are going to succeed by...

GNAC Champions...oops we did it again

The semis and the final of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference were this weekend. We played Johnson and Wales on Saturday, and beat them to finally reach the final against Emerson College. The season was really tough this year,...

The Magic of Music

It's funny because when I hear advice from my friends and family and even myself, every good or obvious advice just sort of sounds cheesy. Hearing it from Shakira just seems to make it sound...so....so...real?! I guess taking advice from songs isn't a bad thing, as long as I'm listening to the "right" songs, if you know what I mean.

Round 1: Bartol v. Fens

If you ask anyone at Simmons about food on campus, they will happily share their opinion with you and most likely go on and on for a while. So, why shouldn't I share my thoughts? Best for breakfast = Bartol...

Nana

It was the anniversary of my Nana's death yesterday, and I really couldn't handle it. I really have no words for how much I miss her. I haven't had time to really think about it because I had a essay...

Ahhhh! Where has the time gone?

I can't believe half of the semester has already passed! I have so much going on that I am literally taking one thing at a time. Sometimes I think to myself and I wonder why I stress myself out...

Emily, Bib, and Tania in Organic Chemistry II Lab I met Emily for the first time on August 29th, 2010; I had just finished unpacking my stuff in our dorm room as she walked in. We had communicated over...

Piles & Piles of homework!

It is only the second full week of school and it's insane! I love my classes though! I just have to juggle homework, be a leader of Alternative Spring Break, as well as my job at a local elementary school!...

1, 2, 3...S-C!

It wasn't until the other day when I talked to my coach that I realized that I didn't really describe myself as an athlete. I mean, isn't that just weird? I play a sport, but for some reason, it's not the first word that I use to describe myself.

Sophomore Status

I've been back at Simmons for almost a week now and it feels great! Today was the first day of classes and I finally finished unpacking too! Even though it was a very rainy gloomy day, I can feel that...

First day of classes!

Today was the first day of classes for Simmons! I had three today, which I absolutely adored, but I was so exhausted! Luckily my schedule gives me Fridays off, so I will be able to enjoy this weekend! I already...

My hot summer!

SO, my summer has been pretty busy so far. As I am writing this, I am sitting on the train to Boston for summer orientation as a Simmons Orientation Leader (OL). My heart is rate is beginning to slow down from my last minute packing!

Happy belated July 4th!

I don't really celebrate July 4th of course, since I'm not American, but I had a lot of fun! I'm finally on vacation visiting my best friend Katelyn in Cape Cod! I'm getting a tan, swimming, going to the...

Summer on my island :)

It has been two months that I have not given any news! Well, I am back home, finally enjoying my family that I could not see all year. The weather is great; sunny and hot as usual, although we...

Home at last =]

Good and bad news. I arrived home this past Sunday, enjoying being around my family, and the comfort of not cooking for myself for quite a long time! Bad news? The second day I'm home, I find out we're moving...again....

Last few days of the semester!

I haven't written anything in a while. I'm stressed beyond belief, and have barely gotten any sleep lately. I had three essays all due on the same day, and now I have a final this Saturday. I go back to...

Fears, fears I will overcome...

Intro to Entrepreneurship (Mgt 237)

Think Entrepreneurially Art. It is such a simple three-letter word and yet it has so much meaning. Within that one syllable, there's love, hate, imagination, emotions, dreams, and journeys. I have a strange love and appreciation for the arts and...

"Hard work, hard work I love you..."

Hello, It is 6:47pm and I just got back from our tennis match against MIT. I am still all sweaty!!! Well...we lost today 8-2 unfortunately. But, we are getting ready for the NCAA in May, so we cannnot look...

Up in the gym just working on my fitness!

Something I really love about Simmons is the gymnasium we have! It's only a short walk from the dorms, and it's always really nice as a stress reliever. I think I'll get on the bike and lift some weights!...

Friendship

Today, I felt like being thankful for my closest friends at Simmons College. I left home when I was 17 years old, and it was not easy to adapt to the American culture and environnement because I had no family here. However, I was blessed to find the right people on my path! When I moved to Boston I was really scared. Fortunately, I met these girls. At first we had those awkward silences in our conversations and those awkward looks when we would see each other in the quad.

Day of Silence at Simmons College

Today was the Day of Silence at Simmons College! I wore as much purple as I owned, and wore the badge! Later there is a "Take Back the Night" event where members of Alliance (Simmons' own LGBT group) is...

Overdue library book

If you really know me, you would know that I constantly lose everything. I probably lost and replaced my retainers about seven times now and each time I replace them it is about four hundred dollars. :/ Recently, I misplaced my retainers again! I have three theories as to where they might be.

My Great Win

I just have four weeks left at Simmons and it is soon the end of a first journey as a freshman. Everyone is now really stressed with exams, papers, lab practicals.... but hopefully we all found something to release...

First blog!

This is one of the best views in the world! Coming from England, and having traveled quite a bit in Europe, I would choose Boston most often over other cities around the world! This city really makes me happy,...
