Summer Stories: LaShawn Holloway

Welcome back to Summer Stories! This series chronicles the great things our students are doing over summer vacation.
Meet LaShawn Holloway from the class of 2015. LaShawn majors in Sociology and minors in Juvenile Justice & Youth Advocacy and English Literature. She is participating in "The Study of the U.S. Institute on Women's Leadership," more affectionately called the Women Changing the Face of Leadership (WCFL) program, hosted at Simmons as a Richardson Fellow. This five-week program, sponsored by the U.S State Department, brings together 20 women from six African nations and five Simmons students, with the goal of strengthening global awareness and developing future leaders. The women from Africa are all undergraduate students from universities in Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Liberia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan and Mali.

We had the chance to catch up with her and see how her summer is going!

What inspired you to participate in the Women Changing the Face of Leadership program?
I have always grown up in very diverse environments and that has taught me to appreciate people from different value systems, moral, racial and ethnic backgrounds. This program embodies diversity and collective learning which is why I feel honored to be a part of it.
What are you most looking forward to about this program?
I can't wait to meet the women from Sub-Saharan Africa! It will be great to form new bonds with people who have similar and different interests. We'll have a plethora of opportunities to explore the city, share our ideas with one another, and it's a great chance for me to hear from other perspectives.
What else are you doing this summer?
This summer I've been a Summer Undergraduate Research Program At Simmons (SURPASs) Scholar in the SURPASs program at Simmons conducting research for my senior thesis.
What's your research on?
My study will complement current studies that have been published about how white students are equated with honors/accelerated programs and the racial demographics of these programs. Additionally, there is current literature about the educational attainment of students not in honors programs. I interviewed fourteen high achieving students who had to adapt and learn to cope with the racial inequality they may have experienced which could affect their performance in school.
