Simmons Kicks Off New Academic Year

Watch: Highlights from Convocation 2013.

Simmons College officially kicked off the 2013-14 academic year with its annual Convocation ceremonies held last week on the Academic Campus Quad.

Convocation is the College's first major event of the year. First held in the fall of 1912 as an observance and memorial for our founder John Simmons, in recent years it recognizes the significant achievements of senior honor students, and officially welcomes new students to Simmons. This year's convocation address was delivered by Katie Conboy, our new Provost and Senior Vice President.

In unity with the theme of "Branching out While Staying Rooted", each new and transfer student was asked to write a dream or wish for their time at Simmons, and place it on trees. Students will have the opportunity to see if their dreams become reality, when their leaves are returned upon completion of their time at Simmons during their Senior Faculty Banquet.

In addition to student recognition, faculty are acknowledged for their outstanding yearly contributions in community service, teaching, advising and research. Mary Shapiro, Professor of Practice in the School of Management was this years recipient of the coveted Faculty Staff Community Service Award.

Simmons is excited to have students back and to start the new semester! Here's how you can stay connected with the College throughout the year:
