300 The Fenway had the opportunity to sit down with Archivist of the United States David Ferriero '74LS who recently stopped by Simmons to deliver the keynote address at the first annual Wikipedia in Higher Education Summit.

As the 10th AOTUS, Ferriero says his biggest challenge is guiding the preservation of electronic records, including social media. Here's what else he had to say about the changing world of archives management and his time at Simmons:

Q: Tell me about your job as the National Archivist?
As the archivist of the United States, I am responsible for all of the records of government--the 275 agencies and the White House.
Q: How does the work that you do, in your opinion, make an impact on the country and society?
The archives is responsible for not only collecting the records, but more importantly, making them available to the American public so that the American public can hold the government accountable for its actions and to document our history.

Simmons College will host the first ever Wikipedia in Higher Education Summit this Friday and Saturday. The summit will celebrate the volunteers who participated in Wikimedia's university based program initiatives, and will be the last event for the Wikimedia Foundation's Public Policy Initiative. The event will serve as an opportunity for professors, students, and Wikipedia Ambassadors to discuss the future of university based programs.

The Public Policy Initiative was started by the Wikimedia Foundation to improve the online encyclopedia by asking professors and students to contribute to articles on the site. The foundation provides professors with lesson plans and also trains Campus Ambassadors and Online Ambassadors who serve as mentors for the students.

The day will begin with a key note address from Simmons College Library and Information Science alumnus David Ferriero '74, 10th National Archivist of the United States. Dominic McDevitt-Parks, a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador for the College and a Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives and Records Administration, will introduce Ferriero at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. The summit will take place in the Linda K. Paresky Conference Center on the third floor of the Main College Building.
