Tennis 2009 Season in Review

November 16, 2009 Simmons Tennis wrapped up the fall 2009 season after capturing the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament Championship for the fifth time in six years, and securing a #24 ranking among Northeast Division III programs from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association—the highest ever ITA ranking for Simmons. The Sharks turned in a perfect 8-0 regular season GNAC performance, amounting to a 68-4 record in individual conference matches. “Overall, this was a very successful fall season,” said Head Coach Bob Rauseo. “Despite a rigorous schedule and some key injuries we managed to go 68-4. That’s a record that will probably never be equaled.”

Tennis Ranked 24th in Northeast by ITA

November 12, 2009 Simmons Tennis has been ranked 24th among Northeast Division III programs, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Wednesday. The ranking is the highest-ever for Simmons, previously ranked 25th in spring 2009.

Tennis Captures 2009 GNAC Championship Title

October 26, 2009 Simmons Tennis captured the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship on Sunday, besting #2 seed Suffolk University 6-0 to take the title for the fifth time in six years. The GNAC Championship caps a perfect 8-0 conference record for the Sharks in 2009.

Three Sharks Earn 2009 GNAC Tennis All-Conference Honors

October 25, 2009 Simmons Tennis freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) earned the highest All-Conference honors awarded by the GNAC, the conference announced on Saturday. Salmela was named both Player AND Rookie of the Year for 2009, reflecting her remarkable achievement of going undefeated at #1 singles in the GNAC as a freshman this fall. Salmela, junior Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) and junior Katy Hallinan (Maynard, Mass.) each earned a spot on the GNAC First Team for Singles. In addition, Macleod and Salmela were named to the GNAC First Team for doubles. Macleod was also named to the All-Conference Sportsmanship Team.

Salmela Named GNAC Player of the Week

October 22, 2009 Simmons freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday evening. This is the first POW honor for Salmela this season, who has swept Rookie honors for each of the six weeks of the fall 2009 season.

Tennis Competes at NEWITT

October 19, 2009 Simmons Tennis competed at the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), held at Middlebury College on Friday and Saturday. Despite facing some very strong competition, the Sharks managed to finish the weekend with a 3-3 record. "Overall, the quality of tennis was very high,” said Head Coach Bob Rauseo. “Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.), Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Jordan Borash (Marblehead, Mass.) all played elimination matches and came through with wins. This was some of our best tennis of the season."

Tennis Captures Weekly GNAC Honors

October 14, 2009 Simmons junior Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) has been named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week, and freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) was named GNAC Tennis Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday evening. This is the second POW honor for Macleod this season, while Salmela has swept ROW honors for each of the five weeks of the fall 2009 season.

Tennis Wins Conference Doubleheader, Salmela Earns GNAC Rookie 4th Week in a Row

October 5, 2009 Simmons Tennis swept Albertus Magnus, 9-0, and Emerson College, 8-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday. Both games were rescheduled due to rain earlier in the season. With the win, the Sharks improve to 8-4 overall and a perfect 6-0 GNAC mark. Freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) improved to 4-0 in #1 singles on the week, and earned her fourth GNAC Rookie of the Week honor of the season after defeating three GNAC opponents (JWU, Albertus, Emerson) and a NEWMAC opponent from Mount Holyoke.

After Marathon Battle, Tennis Drops Match to Lyons, 5-4

October 2, 2009 Simmons Tennis battled Mount Holyoke College for four and a half hours Thursday night, coming up short on the evening to endure a 5-4 non-conference loss. Simmons falls to 6-4 overall, while remaining a perfect 4-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, while the Lyons improve to 2-3 overall, 1-2 NEWMAC.

Tennis Notches GNAC Win vs. Johnson and Wales, 8-1

September 30, 2009 Simmons Tennis racked up another Great Northeast Athletic Conference win on Tuesday evening over Johnson and Wales, dropping only #1 doubles to the Wildcats as they sailed to an 8-1 victory. The Sharks improve to 6-3 overall, remaining an unbeaten 4-0 in the GNAC and taking the conference’s #1 spot, while JWU falls to 2-5 overall, 1-2 GNAC.

Tennis Shines at ITA Regional Championships

September 19, 2009 Simmons Tennis competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday. Junior captain Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.), freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.), sophomore Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) and sophomore Liza Pope (West Newbury, Mass.) all represented the Sharks in the 2009 tournament, held at MIT.

Salmela Named GNAC Tennis Rookie of the Week

September 15, 2009 Simmons freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) earned Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday. Salmela, who has played #1 singles for the Sharks since beginning her collegiate career, had a good week against tough competition.

Tennis Wins GNAC Opener vs. Pine Manor, 9-0

September 15, 2009 Simmons Tennis opened fall 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Pine Manor College. The Sharks swept the Gators, 9-0, while the match featured the first collegiate career singles and doubles wins by sophomore transfer Brittany Dolloff (Hollis, N.H.) and freshman Veronica Nowakowski (Belchertown, Mass.).

Sharks Defeated By Judges, 9-0

September 13, 2009 Simmons Tennis fell to the Brandeis Judges on Sunday, 9-0. In #1 singles, Simmons freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) gave Rachel Rosman plenty of trouble in the first set before Rosman, ranked #41 in the country, won the match 7-6, 6-0.

Tennis 2009 Season Preview

August 24, 2009 Simmons Tennis is poised to begin the 2009 season after a successful 2008 campaign. The Sharks finished 2008 with a 12-6 overall record, and a 9-0 run against Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponents. Simmons captured the 2008 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship for the fourth time in five years, and in doing so qualified for the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The team, led by Head Coach Bob Rauseo, the 2008 GNAC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year, finished the season ranked 25th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the New England region, tying a program high set in 2007.

Simmons Tennis Tops GNAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll

August 27, 2009 Simmons Tennis earned the number one ranking in Great Northeast Athletic Conference preseason voting, the conference office announced on Wednesday. The Sharks captured the 2008 GNAC championship for the fourth time in five years, after posting a 12-6 overall record and 9-0 GNAC record.

Hallinan and Lynch Named 2009 ITA Scholar-Athletes

August 3, 2009 Simmons Tennis athletes Katy Hallinan (Lakeville, Mass.) and Athena Lynch (Andover, Mass.) received 2009 Scholar-Athlete honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Among the Division III Women to receive the Scholar-Athlete award, Hallinan and Lynch were the only Great Northeast Athletic Conference athletes to earn the honors.

Sharks Earn 2008-09 GNAC Academic All-Conference Honors

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference recognized 501 student-athletes from 15 league sports on the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team. Simmons boasted 38 athletes who received the honor, and all seven of the Simmons varsity programs sponsored by the GNAC were represented on this year’s Academic All-Conference team.

Tennis Ranked 25th in Northeast

May 5, 2009 In the final week before Simmons Tennis competes in the NCAA Division III Tournament, the Sharks have been ranked 25th among Northeast Division III programs. The May 1 ranking, administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, is the highest-ever for Simmons this late in the spring season.

Tennis Wins NCAA Prep Match vs. Endicott, 6-3

April 27, 2009 Simmons Tennis hosted Endicott College on Saturday in a preparation match for the NCAA Division III Tournament in May. The Sharks bested the Gulls, 6-3, in a strong showing after finishing the fall season undefeated in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

Tennis 2008 Season In Review

November 12, 2008 Simmons Tennis finished the 2008 campaign with an 11-5 overall record, and a 7-0 run against Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponents. The Sharks captured the GNAC Championship for the fourth time in five years. Head Coach Bob Rauseo received GNAC Coach of the Year honors for the third time in four years. Katy Hallinan (Lakeville, Mass.), Maile Macloed (Carlsbad, Calif.), Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) and Stacey Kohan (Milford, Conn.) each received GNAC All-Conference honors at the close of the 2008 season. Simmons is now the 10th-ranked Division III team in Massachusetts, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

October 27, 2008 - Four Simmons tennis players garnered GNAC Conference honors as announced by the GNAC Conference on Monday afternoon. Tennis Captures Fourth GNAC Tournament Title

October 26, 2008 - The No. 1-seeded Simmons tennis team knocked off third-seeded Johnson and Wales, 6-3, on Sunday evening at the Weymouth Club to claim it’s fourth Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Championship in the last five years. The Sharks, the best team in the conference all season long, enjoyed a successful start to the tournament with a 7-2 win over fifth seed Emerson on Saturday in the tournament semifinals.

Tennis Competes in New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament

Ocotber 19, 2008 On October 17 -18, 2008 the Simmons College tennis team traveled to Western Massachusetts to participate in the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT). The team played very well, winning in both singles and doubles competition.

Simmons College Tennis Defeats Johnson & Wales 6-3

The Simmons College tennis team traveled to Providence, R.I. to take on Johnson & Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match up. The Sharks defeated Johnson & Wales 6-3, improving to 4-3 overall (GNAC 3-0). Johnson & Wales is now 2-2 overall (GNAC 2-1).

Pope and Taylor Lift Tennis Over Suffolk, Simmons Wins 6-3

September 11, 2008 Simmons Tennis improved their overall record to 2-3-0 yesterday, after a 6-3 victory over Suffolk University. The Sharks swept the three doubles matches and took three of the six singles matches. Simmons is now undefeated in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play for 2008 (1-0), and maintains their 21-match home winning streak.

Borash and Lynch Come From Behind to Win Doubles Match v. Babson

September 9, 2008 Simmons Tennis finished with an overall loss to Babson Tuesday night, 8-1. The bright spot for the Sharks was the Victory of Doubles pair Jordan Borash (Marblehead, MA) and Athena Lynch (Andover, MA) over Babson’s Brittany Whitenack (Pittsford, NY) and Ashley Lake (Brockton, MA) in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4).

Tennis Topped by Wheaton

August 30, 2008 Simmons Tennis dropped their first match of the season to Wheaton College Saturday, with a final score of 9-0. Despite the loss, Head Coach Bob Rauseo was pleased with the match, which was “much closer than the final score shows.”

Tennis 2008 Season Preview

Simmons Tennis is preparing to open the 2008 season riding on the momentum of last season’s successes. The Sharks finished the year ranked 25th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Northeast fall rankings, a program best.
