Simmons Softball 16th in NFCA All-Academic Ranking

BOSTON, Mass. – Simmons Softball tailed a 3.433 team grade point average (GPA) during the 2010-2011 season to place 16th out of 111 Division III teams in the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Academic team rankings announced last week.

Thompson ’11 Named ECAC 2011 Softball Player of the Year

August 10, 2011 Simmons Softball’s Annie Thompson ’11 (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Softball Player of the Year, and also earned ECAC First Team shortstop honors, the conference announced today. This is the first ECAC POY honor for a Simmons Softball student-athlete.

Sharks Earn 2010-11 GNAC Academic All-Conference Honors

June 29, 2011 The Great Northeast Athletic Conference recognized 598 student-athletes from 16 league sports on the 2010-11 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team. 46 Simmons athletes received the honor, and all seven of the Simmons varsity programs sponsored by the GNAC were represented on this year’s Academic All-Conference Team.

Softball 2011 Season In Review

May 25, 2011 Simmons College Softball finished the 2011 season with much to celebrate: With a 25-17 overall record and a 19-5 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, the Sharks posted two of the best records in program history. The team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the post-season ECAC tournament, and five Simmons athletes received major postseason honors, including Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. In addition, Head Coach Anne Hennigan was named GNAC Coach of the Year.

May 18, 2011 Simmons College Softball seniors Courteney Collier (Bolton, Mass.) and Annie Thompson (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) have been named to the College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) Capital One Academic All-District softball teams. Thompson was named to the First Team, and Collier received a spot on the Second Team.

May 18, 2011 Three Simmons College Softball players have been named to the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Northeast All-Region teams. Sharks Exit ECAC Tournament with 4-0 Loss to UNE

May 16, 2011 No. 5 seed Simmons College Softball gave up a 4-0 loss to the No. 3 seed University of New England in Saturday’s ECAC Double Elimination round following a morning loss to No. 1 seed Keene State. UNE and No. 2 Brandies advanced to the championship game, which was cancelled due to heavy rain.

Sharks Advance in ECAC Tournament with 7-4 Win Over WNEC

May 12, 2011 Senior Courteney Collier (Bolton, Mass.) pitched and batted fifth-seeded Simmons to a 7-4 victory over fourth-seeded Western New England Wednesday afternoon in a first-round game of the ECAC Division III New England Softball Championship.

Sharks Selected to 2011 ECAC Softball Tournament as No. 5 Seed

May 10, 2011 Simmons College Softball has been selected to the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Softball Championship, the ECAC announced on Monday. This is the program’s second appearance in the ECAC tournament; the Sharks’ first was in the 2008 season. The tournament is a seven-team field with six teams participating in a single-elimination quarterfinal round followed by a double-elimination format for the remaining four teams.

Sharks Split With Cadets

April 17, 2011 Simmons Softball earned a 12-2 Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory over Norwich University in the opener of Saturday’s GNAC doubleheader before falling 6-2 in game two to the Cadets (6-16, 6-8 GNAC). With the split, the Sharks are now 19-11 on the season, 15-3 in the conference.

Sharks Split With UMass Boston

April 15, 2011 Simmons softball notched a 7-2 victory over UMass Boston on Thursday afternoon before falling 2-0 to the Beacons in game two in a non-conference doubleheader. The Sharks now boast a 16-10 record while the Beacons stand at 16-8 on the year.

Sharks Sweep GNAC Weekend

April 11, 2011 Simmons College Softball secured four Great Northeast Athletic Conference wins over the weekend, earning 2-0 and 6-2 victories over Emerson College on Saturday and two 12-0 five-inning wins over Albertus Magnus on Sunday. With three conference matchups behind them, including two wins over Mount Ida on Friday, Simmons extends their winning streak to eight games and takes the top spot in the conference, previously held by Emerson.

Sharks Bite Mustangs

April 8, 2011 Simmons Softball took both games of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) twin bill against Mount Ida College on Friday afternoon, 6-2; 14-2, in Newton, Mass. The Sharks improve to 11-9, good for second in the conference standings, moving to a GNAC slate of 8-2, while the Mustangs, who continue their slide losing their fifth and sixth contests in a row, drop to an overall record of 5-17 and slump to 1-7 in league play.

Thompson Named GNAC Player of the Week, Earns National Ranking

Additionally, she has been ranked first in the nation among NCAA Division III softball players in Batting Average (.585) and third in On Base Percentage (.611).

Sharks Snag Two From Saints

April 4, 2011 Simmons College Softball grabbed two 5-inning wins over Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader played on Roberto Clemente Field on Sunday afternoon. The Sharks cruised to a 17-1 win in the opener, before topping Emmanuel, 12-4, in the nightcap. The pair of losses drops the Saints to 6-10 on the season and 2-4 in GNAC play, while Simmons improves to 9-9 overall and 6-2 in the league.

Sharks Defeat MIT, 8-6

March 16, 2011 Simmons Softball scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to hand host MIT an 8-6 defeat in non-conference softball action at Briggs Field on Tuesday. The Engineers led for most of the afternoon but were unable to hold on to a 5-2 advantage, falling to 0-1 for the 2011 campaign. The Sharks boosted their overall record to 3-7 with the win.

Softball 2011 Season Preview

March 1, 2011 Simmons Softball returns for the 2011 campaign when the team travels to Clermont Fla. to tackle the National Training Center Spring Tournament. The Sharks look to have another strong season after finishing 24-12 overall and 16-8 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference in 2010, a year that included a 13-game winning streak and fourth place finish in the GNAC Tournament.

Hennigan Appointed to NCAA Regional Advisory Committee

November 5, 2010 Head Softball Coach Anne Hennigan, has been appointed a member of the NCAA Softball Regional Advisory Committee. As a member of the committee, Hennigan will work with five other representatives to select and rank the top teams in the Northeast region on a weekly basis. The ranking will begin in late March and span the course of the season until the NCAA Division III Softball Championship in May.

Athletes Honored at Annual Evening of Champions Awards Ceremony

Five student athletes were honored and one alumna was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Department of Athletics’ annual Evening of Champions awards ceremony on May 5, 2010. At the end of each academic year, athletes from each Simmons varsity team are recognized for their academic and athletic achievements. Five individual awards concluded the evening to distinguish the athletes that stood out among their peers during the year.

Softball 2010 Season Review

May 19, 2010 Simmons Softball ended the 2010 spring season on a strong note, finishing fourth overall in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament after being ranked sixth in the pre-season poll. The Sharks capped their season with the second best record in program history (23-12 overall, 16-8 GNAC), while achieving a 13-game mid-season winning streak, a no-hitter and a grand slam. “Simmons softball is hungrier now for a Championship than ever before,” said Head Coach Anne Hennigan. “The program is growing and improving in the right direction. The team now knows what it takes to win and they have the heart and the drive to achieve it.”

Sharks Fall to Monks in GNAC Elimination Round

April 24, 2010 Nashua, N.H. - Simmons Softball was overpowered by St. Joseph’s College (ME), 11-3, in the elimination round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Monks of St. Joseph’s drew first blood in the top of the first inning when Emily Leverone sent a Courteney Collier (Bolton, Mass.) pitch over the center field wall to give the Monks an early 1-0 lead. Simmons answered in the bottom of the frame as Emily Nalband (Litchfield, Conn.) picked up a base hit and was followed by doubles from Annie Thompson (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Leah Derderian (Boylston, Mass.) that plated two runs, giving Simmons the 2-1 lead after one inning. Simmons put another run on the board in the second as Nalband roped a double into the right center gap that scored Ari King (Westford, Mass.) after the freshman ripped a two-out single.

#4 Sharks Set for GNAC Tournament

April 22, 2010 Simmons Softball is poised to enter the Great Northeast Athletic Conference postseason tournament as the fourth seeded team. The Sharks finished the regular conference season with a 16-8 record (21-10 overall), and are scheduled to take on the Cadets of Norwich University on Friday, April 23 at 2:00pm at Rivier College’s facilities.

Sharks Solid on Senior Day

April 18, 2010 Simmons Softball served up a double win on Senior Day over Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Emmanuel College (5-0, 6-0) on Sunday, April 18 at Roberto Clemente Field. Seniors Katelyn Bourgeois, Leah Derderian and Sammi Letizio celebrated their collegiate careers with family and teammates before the start of the contest. The Sharks now stand at 20-9 overall (15-7 GNAC) with one GNAC doubleheader remaining heading into the postseason tournament. The Saints fall to 9-20 overall (5-17 GNAC) with the loss.

Softball Ends Streak, Drops Two to Monks

April 13, 2010 Simmons Softball’s 13-game winning streak came to an end on Monday, as the Sharks fell to Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponent Saint Joseph’s Maine, 5-0, in five innings. With the loss, Simmons drops to 16-6 overall, 11-4 GNAC, while the Monks extend their unbeaten conference streak to 18 games, with an overall mark of 25-5 (18-0 GNAC).

Sharks Swim Past Suffolk in Double GNAC Win

April 12, 2010 Simmons Softball grabbed two Great Northeast Athletic Conference wins over Suffolk University on Sunday at the Boston Common Field, besting the Rams 3-0 and 5-4. Junior Courteney Collier (Bolton, Mass.) threw a no-hitter and pitched a perfect game through 5 1/3 innings before surrendering her only walk, which would also be the only base runner for Suffolk. With the win, Simmons advances to 18-4 (13-2 GNAC) while the Rams fall to 7-27 overall (5-15 GNAC).

Softball Captures Two GNAC Wins Over Lasers

April 8, 2010 Simmons Softball captured another Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, this time against the Lasers of Lasell College. The Sharks won game one 6-2, and game two 3-1, to boost their season record to 16-4, and 11-2 GNAC mark. Lasell falls to 9-14-1 on the season, 5-5 GNAC. "I was very pleased with the way the team played today. These were two big wins for us as Lasell is a good team and is in the middle of the playoff hunt,” said Head Coach Anne Hennigan. “We stayed poised even when we were behind and we were able to get timely hits when needed. We still have work to do with big games this coming weekend, but those were two big ones to get."

April 5, 2010 Simmons Softball took both games in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference twin bill on Saturday, sweeping the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College twice in five innings (10-1, 17-0). With the win, the Sharks advance to a strong 14-4 (9-2 GNAC) record, while AMC falls to 0-14 (0-10 GNAC) on the year.

Sharks Take Game One, Nightcap Called In Darkness

April 2, 2010 Simmons bested Pine Manor, 5-1, behind seven strikeouts from Courtney Collier (Bolton, Mass.) in Game One of the teams’ Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday evening. Game Two was postponed in the eighth inning of a 5-5 game thanks to a seventh inning home run and two plays at the plate from Pine Manor catcher Courtney Wallace.

Sharks Sweep Cadets in GNAC Twin Bill

March 29, 2010 Simmons Softball captured both games in a GNAC doubleheader against Norwich University on Sunday. The Sharks won game one, 4-0, and game two in six innings, 11-3. With the wins, Simmons advances to 11-4 overall, 6-2 GNAC, while Norwich falls to 1-13 overall, 0-6 GNAC. “This was a big weekend for us and the team rose to the challenge going a perfect 6-0,” said Head Coach Anne Hennigan. “Our pitching was huge, our defensive stops were clutch and our bats were hot. Those are all of the ingredients needed to win.”

March 27, 2010 Simmons Softball swept the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University on Friday, picking up two Great Northeast Athletic Conference wins, 7-3 and 6-5. The Sharks kept their momentum from Thursday’s wins over Mount Ida, and now advance to 9-4, 4-2 in the GNAC. With the losses, JWU falls to 1-12 overall, 1-5 in GNAC play.

Sharks Shock Mustangs, Sweep GNAC Doubleheader

March 25, 2010 Simmons Softball secured both games over Mount Ida in Thursday’s Great Northeast Athletic Conference twin bill, winning 11-6 and 6-3 against their Newton, Mass. hosts. The Mustangs fall to 6-5 overall, 1-3 in league play while the Sharks improve to 7-4 (2-2 GNAC). “I’m extremely proud of how the team played this afternoon. It’s always nice to get the first conference win and we did so as a team,” said Head Coach Anne Hennigan. “We had a shaky first inning in the first game, but after that we never gave up and we were able to find our groove. Collier pitched extremely well in both games and our offense was explosive when we needed it to be.”

Sharks Outsmart Engineers, 7-3

March 19, 2010 Simmons Softball put up four runs in the fourth inning en-route to a 7-3 win over MIT Thursday afternoon at Briggs Field in Cambridge, Mass. Junior Emily Colligan (Leominster, Mass.) had three hits and scored twice and senior Sammi Letizio (Windham, N.H.) worked five innings to earn the win, as the Sharks improved to 5-2 on the season. The Engineers’ Jessica Iacobucci took the loss, allowing just one earned run over seven innings and striking out a career-high 12 batters. “Today was a complete team win. We used three pitchers to keep MIT’s batters off balance and it proved effective,” said Head Coach Anne Hennigan. “Equally as impressive was our offense. Despite striking out far too many times, we did have some quality at bats. We came up with clutch hits and put the ball in play when we needed to.”

Softball Soaks Up Spring Break Wins

March 17, 2010 Simmons Softball opened the 2010 season in sunny Clermont, Fla. during last week’s spring break March 7-12. The Sharks, ranked sixth in the preseason Great Northeast Athletic Conference coaches’ poll, went 4-2 on the week and are poised to begin their conference campaign after a week of practice back on Boston soil. “I was extremely happy with how the team played in Florida. It’s always nice to finally play on a field after being cooped in the gym for five weeks,” said Head Coach Anne Hennigan. “Sometimes it takes a while for a team to warm-up, but this year the Sharks came out firing.”

Softball 2010 Season Preview

March 2, 2010 Simmons Softball will open the spring 2010 season in Clermont, Fla. when the team competes in a week of games at the National Training Center. The Sharks finished the 2009 season with a 12-12 Great Northeast Athletic Conference record and a 16-23 overall record. As the post-season tournament’s eighth seed, Simmons defeated fifth seed Norwich University and third seed Suffolk University to place fourth in the conference playoffs.

Softball Athletes Receive NFCA Scholar-Athlete Award

January 14, 2010 Five Softball athletes have been awarded with the 2008-09 Scholar-Athlete award by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. 2009 graduate Keely Brinchman, junior pitcher Courteney Collier (Bolton, Mass.), junior catcher Emily Nalband (Litchfield, Conn.) and junior shortstop Annie Thompson (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) each received the honor, given to student-athletes who have acquired a 3.5 GPA for the year. Sharks freshman Ari King also received the 08-09 award as a senior high school student at Westford Academy.

Simmons Softball 2009 Season In Review

May 18, 2009 Simmons Softball ended the 2009 season under first year Head Coach Anne Hennigan with a 16-23 overall record, and a 12-12 record in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The Sharks began the season with a tough spring training schedule in Orlando, Florida, where they tested themselves against nationally ranked teams to prepare for their GNAC competition. After returning to Boston, the Sharks recorded a strong season and continued to gain momentum toward the postseason, where Simmons, seeded eighth, earned a fourth-place finish in the GNAC Tournament after upending #5 seed Norwich and #3 seed Suffolk in the tournament semifinals.

April 23, 2009 Courteney Collier (Bolton, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with a double and four runs batted in, and Ashley Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.) was 3-for-5 with three RBIs to help lead eighth-seeded Simmons (15-21) past fifth-seeded Norwich, 13-7, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament game Wednesday afternoon.

Simmons Sweeps Rivier; 2-0, 1-0

April 18, 2009 Simmons Softball swept a Saturday doubleheader against Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Rivier at home on Senior Day, 2-0, 1-0. The Sharks honored five seniors in the final game of their regular season: Meredith Burr, Kelsey Hasick, Sam Green, Keely Brinchman and Kristen Souza. With the victories, Simmons is now 12-12 GNAC, 14-21 overall.

Softball Dominates Wildcats; 6-2, 7-5

April 17, 2009 Simmons Softball recorded two wins against Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Johnson and Wales on Friday afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Courteney Collier struck out 15 Wildcat batters on the day, and sophomore Annie Thompson had four home runs. The two sophomores led the Sharks to two victories, 6-2, 7-5. With the wins, Simmons is now 10-12 GNAC, 12-21 overall.

Softball Takes Two in Defeat of Bluejays; 6-5, 1-0

April 13, 2009 Simmons Softball swept Saint Joseph’s of Connecticut in a Monday afternoon doubleheader at home. The Sharks won game one 6-5, and pulled out a 1-0 win in the evening game. With the win, Simmons is now ranked eight in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with a GNAC record of 8-10 GNAC, 10-19 overall.

Simmons Splits GNAC Doubleheader with Norwich; 10-7, 4-2

April 11, 2009 Simmons Softball split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Norwich on Saturday afternoon. The Sharks endured a 10-7 loss in the opening game, before taking a 4-2 decision in the nightcap. Simmons moves to 6-10 GNAC, 8-19 overall following the split, while Norwich falls to 9-9 GNAC, 10-16 overall on the year.

Softball Wins Three in Weekend GNAC Play

April 4-5, 2009 Simmons Softball took three out of four games in this weekend’s set of Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheaders. The Sharks went 1-1 against Emerson College on Saturday, winning game one 3-2, and dropping game two 8-0 in six innings. The Sharks’ bats came alive on Sunday en route to two conference wins against Albertus Magnus College on Sunday, winning game one 12-0 in five innings, and game two 12-3. First year Ashley Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.) led the charge with two grand slams, one in each game, and 9 RBIs on the day. Junior Sammi Letizio (Windham, N.H.) and sophomore transfer Courteney Collier (Bolton, Mass.) both pitched to propel the Sharks to their 3rd and 4th conference wins. Sharks belted 28 hits on the day and were error-less in the field. The Sharks improve to 6-13 overall, 4-4 GNAC on the weekend.

March 27, 2009 Simmons Softball fell to Saint Joseph College of Maine on Friday night 3-1 and 7-2 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Sharks fall to 3-12 overall and 1-3 GNAC, while the Lady Monks improve to 2-2, 8-6 GNAC.

Sharks Softball Splits GNAC Opener with Saints

March 23, 2009 Simmons Softball opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Sunday against Emmanuel College with a doubleheader split. Junior pitcher Sammi Letizio (Windham, N.H.) held Emmanuel to a 1-hitter, striking out seven and walking two to lead the Sharks to a 12-0 game one victory. Simmons dropped the evening game 4-2 to the Saints. Simmons is now 3-10 overall; 1-1 GNAC.

Softball 2009 Season Preview

Simmons Softball returns to the field in 2009 after a strong 2008 performance, in which the Sharks achieved program-best records of 35-12 overall and 21-5 GNAC to finish ranked second in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference after the regular season. The Sharks went on to a third place finish in the GNAC Tournament, and made the program’s first appearance in the ECAC tournament seeded third, and finishing third.

Three Simmons Softball Players Honored by NFCA

Simmons Softball players Dannie Szabo, Ann Talarico and Sammi Letizio were given National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region honors for the 2008 season. Third baseman Dannie Szabo (White Plains, NY) was named to the 2008 NFCA’s First-Team All-Region. Talarico (Ware, MA), at shortstop, and Letizio (Windham, NH), at outfield, were named to the Third-Team All-Region in the At-Large category.
