Erica Mastrogiacomo enters her sicth year as Simmons's Head Soccer Coach and Camp Director. In the 2009 season, Mastrogiacomo led the Sharks to an 11-5-3 overall record and a berth in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament for the fourth straight season. The Sharks' 2009 campaign included a Great Northeast Athletic Conference title and an NCAA Division III tournament appearance. Her peers selected Mastrogiacomo as the 2009 GNAC Coach of the Year.

Since taking over in 2006, ten student athletes have garnered all-conference accolades under the direction of Coach Mastrogiacomo including the 2009 GNAC Rookie of the Year. Five members of the 2009 squad were named to the All-Tournament team including the GNAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Prior to being named head coach, Mastrogiacomo served as an assistant coach for two seasons. During that span, Simmons went 28-4-1, won the GNAC tournament championship in 2004, the regular season crown in 2005 and made Simmons' first-ever NCAA Division III tournament appearance in any sport.

A four-year starter at Syracuse University from 2000-03, Mastrogiacomo made 64 career starts for the Orange and scored six goals from her midfield position. A two-year captain, she ended her career tied for ninth on the program's all-time assist list. Mastrogiacomo, who was a Big East Conference academic all-star each of her eight semesters at Syracuse, received the Verhulst Sportswoman of the Year Award in 2003. The award is given to the SU athlete that best exhibits sportsmanship, leadership and attitude on the field.

In addition to her collegiate experience, Mastrogiacomo returned to the Women's Professional Soccer League in 2009 as co-captain of the Bay State Select, and made an appearance for the United States National "B" Team in 2002 against Mexico. Mastrogiacomo holds a United States Soccer Federation Coaching “D” License and an NSCAA National Diploma, and currently coaches for FC Greater Boston Bolts. She has worked numerous camps and clinics, including Boston College, Princeton University, Bowdoin College and Villanova University. She attended the NCAA Women Coaches' Academy in June 2009.

A native of Weymouth, Mass., Mastrogiacomo earned a bachelor's degree in social work from Syracuse in 2004. She worked previously as a special education teacher at Thomas V. Nash elementary school in Weymouth. Mastrogiacomo is currently pursuing a master's degree in Communications Management.

 

Caitlin Schimmel

Assistant Soccer Coach, Athletics

Caitlin Schimmel is entering her sixth season as the Assistant Soccer Coach at Simmons College. Schimmel’s duties include assisting in planning training sessions, game day management and recruiting. She is also responsible for tracking game data and scouting opponents. “There is a direct correlation of the addition of Schimmel to the women’s soccer staff and the program’s success,"says Head Coach Erica Mastrogiacomo. "She has provided consistency and excellent soccer knowledge while maintaining an approachable personality that is well received by the team. Her work with our defensive line has proven successful. She is a valuable and crucial member of the Simmons Soccer program.”

Schimmel played at Community College of Rhode Island for two years and continued her career at Rhode Island College for two years. She was named captain at both schools, and also earned regional honors. She ranks among the school’s leaders in both points in a season and assists in a season at RIC. Schimmel received the Helen Murphy Award for the top female Student-Athlete, and was nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year award in 2003.

In November 2006, Schimmel was inducted into the Cumberland High School Hall of Fame and recognized for her contributions. Schimmel was a member of the first-ever female soccer program at Cumberland High School in Cumberland, RI after playing on the boys’ team as a freshman.

Schimmel graduated from Rhode Island College in 2002 with a degree in Psychology. She currently works as a Project Manager for Orion RED and resides in Cumberland, RI.

Lynn Gugliuzza

Assistant/Goalkeeping Coach

Lynn Gugliuzza returns for her third season as Assistant/Goalkeeping Coach for Simmons Soccer. As goalkeeping coach, she will design and implement all keeper-specific training sessions. She will also assist in team training, game day management and recruiting. “Lynn has made a significant contribution to the Simmons soccer program, says Head Coach Mastrogiacomo. “She provides an opportunity for our goalkeepers to receive functional training and constructive feedback specific to the goalkeeper position. She is an excellent motivator and demands the best from our student-athletes.”
 
Gugliuzza played for the University of New Hampshire from 2003-2006. During this time she earned the Student-Athlete Award (2006), Player’s Award (2006), and was an America East Academic Honor Roll member throughout her entire collegiate career.
 
A native of Kenmore, N.Y., Gugliuzza graduated from UNH in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology: Sport Studies, and a minor in Business Administration. She most recently completed a Masters in Education with a Coaching specialization at Boston University in June 2008.
 
Gugliuzza holds an NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeping Diploma in addition to an NSCAA National Diploma. She received her USSF "B” license during the summer of 2010. Prior to Simmons, Gugliuzza worked with the women’s soccer team at Boston University as a Volunteer Assistant. She is currently a State Development Coach for Massachusetts Youth Soccer and serves as an assistant coach for the Massachusetts State Olympic Development Program for girls under-17. She resides in Somerville, Mass.
