Soccer Captures GNAC Championship Over Emmanuel in Double Overtime, 2-1

November 7, 2009 Simmons pushed Emmanuel College into double overtime to take the 2-1 victory over the second-seeded Saints in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship game on Saturday. Freshman Lian Atturio (Hanover, Mass.) scored both goals for the Sharks, including the game-winner, which came in the 117th minute. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Elliot (Amherst, N.H.) made 11 stops to help lead fifth-seeded Simmons to the Championship title. With the win, the Sharks earn an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III tournament, Simmons’ first national appearance since 2004.

Mastrogiacomo Named GNAC 2009 Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year

November 7, 2009 Simmons Head Soccer Coach Erica Mastrogiacomo has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference 2009 Coach of the Year, the GNAC announced Friday evening. The honor comes after a fall season in which Mastrogiacomo led the Sharks to a 9-5-3 regular season record (7-2-3 GNAC) and a GNAC Championship, after earning a berth in the conference post-season tournament as the fifth seed. "I could not have done it without the help of my assistant coaches,” said Mastrogiacomo. “They are a huge support and the three of us are completely committed to this program. I am honored and humbled by this award."

Beauchamp Named GNAC Soccer Rookie of the Year, Five Sharks Earn All-Conference Honors

November 7, 2009 Simmons freshman midfielder Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, N.H.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, the GNAC announced Friday Evening. The honor comes after a 2009 first year season in which Beauchamp started every game for Simmons, and ranked in the top 10 in the conference for shots. Beauchamp also earned Third Team All-Conference honors.

Soccer Stuns Saint Joseph’s, 1-0, Advances to Championship Game

November 5, 2009 Simmons Soccer (11-5-3, 7-2-3 GNAC) knocked top seed Saint Joseph's Maine (12-6-2, 9-1-2 GNAC) out of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament in the semifinal round, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon. The fifth-seeded Sharks received a goal from sophomore Anna Bolton (Amherst, N.H.) in the 24th minute of play and will advance to the GNAC Championship.

Sharks Topped by Saints in GNAC Quarterfinals

November 4, 2009 Simmons Volleyball was defeated by Emmanuel, 3-1, on Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal match. The 3rd-seeded Saints escaped a tough Sharks team, which held a solid lead in three of the four sets. Emmanuel’s tournament experience paid off, as the Saints edged the 6th-seeded Sharks in four sets (25-23, 21-25, 25-15, 25-23).

Szkolt And Sypher Earn 2009 NAC All-Conference Honors

November 3, 2009 Simmons Field Hockey earned two spots on the North Atlantic Conference 2009 All-Conference Team, the NAC announced on Tuesday. Senior forward Emily Sypher (Orono, Maine) and senior goalkeeper Jen Szkolt (Bondsville, Mass.) each earned a spot on the All-Conference First Team.

Soccer Advances in GNAC Tournament With 3-0 Win over Emerson

November 2, 2009 Fifth seeded Simmons Soccer upset fourth seed Emerson College, 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament First Round game at Emerson's Rotch Field on Sunday. The Sharks rode two goals from freshman Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, N.H.) to take the victory and advance to Wednesday’s semifinal game at Saint Joseph’s Maine.

Volleyball Edges Past Cadets, Secures #6 Seed in GNAC Tournament

November 1, 2009 The Simmons College Sharks concluded their regular season on Saturday with an exciting 3-2 victory over Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponent Norwich University. Simmons’ victory (25-20, 18-25, 25-22, 11-25, 15-10) secured the sixth seed for the Sharks in the postseason conference Tournament, which opens on Tuesday, November 3, when #6 Simmons travels to #3, rival Emmanuel College for a 7pm quarterfinal game.

Freshman Swimmer Musket Shatters Pool, Team Record

October 31, 2009 Simmons freshman Alyssa Musket (Lincoln, R.I.) lowered the Simmons pool and program record for the 50-yard Free on Saturday afternoon. Musket’s 25.09 broke the team mark of 25.55, set in 1995 by Tara Spellissy, and the Pool mark of 25.80, set by Spellissy in 1993. The swim came during the Sharks’ season and home opener against the Westfield State Owls, who went home with the 161-130 win.

Volleyball Falls to Lynx, 3-1

October 29, 2009 Simmons Volleyball was defeated by non-conference Lesley University on Wednesday night, 3-1. The Sharks won the first set but was steamrolled by the Lynx for the next three. With the win, Lesley improved to 11-12 (3-2 NECC) while Simmons falls to 12-15 on the season, and remains 6-4 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

Swimming & Diving 2009-10 Season Preview

October 29, 2009 Simmons Swimming & Diving is preparing to open the 2009-10 season and return to competition after a successful 2008-09 campaign. Last winter, the Sharks captured the 2008 GNAC Championship—the fifth title in a row for Simmons, and the seventh in eight years for the program. Simmons also finished in 11th place at the NEISDA Championships, after qualifying a record 13 athletes for the meet. Second-year Head Coach Mindy Williams, the 2008-09 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Swimming Coach of the Year, will look to lead the Sharks to another conference title in 2009, and another strong showing at New Englands. Williams and the Sharks will push for a strong dual meet season, and aim to remain undefeated in the conference.

Volleyball Sweeps Conference Tri-Match

October 28, 2009 Simmons Volleyball hosted Lasell College and Saint Joseph College of Connecticut for a weekend tri-match on Saturday, October 24. The Sharks bested the Lasers, 3-1, and defeated the Blue Jays, 3-0, to improve their Great Northeast Athletic Conference record to 6-4, and their overall record to 12-14.

Field Hockey Battles Husson on Senior Day

October 26, 2009 Simmons Field Hockey faced Husson University on Sunday. The Sharks battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the first half to tie the game 3-3 in the waning minutes, but the Eagles found the back of the Simmons box just in time to win the contest, 4-3. With the loss, Simmons ends their season with a 1-5 North Atlantic Conference record. The day also saw a celebration for seniors Jen Szkolt (Bondsville, Mass.), Maggie Weeks (Melvin Village, N.H.), and Emily Sypher (Orono, Maine). Sypher scored two goals and had one assist on the day for Simmons.

Tennis Captures 2009 GNAC Championship Title

October 26, 2009 Simmons Tennis captured the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship on Sunday, besting #2 seed Suffolk University 6-0 to take the title for the fifth time in six years. The GNAC Championship caps a perfect 8-0 conference record for the Sharks in 2009.

Three Sharks Earn 2009 GNAC Tennis All-Conference Honors

October 25, 2009 Simmons Tennis freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) earned the highest All-Conference honors awarded by the GNAC, the conference announced on Saturday. Salmela was named both Player AND Rookie of the Week for 2009, reflecting her remarkable achievement of going undefeated at #1 singles in the GNAC as a freshman this fall. Salmela, junior Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) and junior Katy Hallinan (Maynard, Mass.) each earned a spot on the GNAC First Team for Singles. In addition, Macleod and Salmela were named to the GNAC First Team for doubles. Macleod was also named to the All-Conference Sportsmanship Team.

Simmons Field Hockey fell to North Atlantic Conference leader St. Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday, 3-2. The Sharks fought back from a 2-1 deficit to bring the Monks to overtime but came up short in the end, with a final score of 3-2 on the day.

Salmela Named GNAC Player of the Week

October 22, 2009 Simmons freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday evening. This is the first POW honor for Salmela this season, who has swept Rookie honors for each of the six weeks of the fall 2009 season.

Brown Named NAC Rookie of the Week

October 22, 2009 Simmons freshman Marianna Brown (Newton, N.H.) has been named the North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week, the NAC announced on Monday evening. This marks the second week in a row a first-year from Simmons has earned the honors. Brown’s recognition comes after a week in which the forward scored two goals in a conference win over Rivier College for the Sharks. Her improvement in the offensive circle is showing and she has become a strong part of the Sharks' offense.

Simmons Sharks Dig Pink!

October is the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Simmons Athletics wants to do its part. The Sharks will participate by providing pink ribbons to our fans at all home games this weekend, for a small donation. 100% of the donations will go directly to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation. This grassroots organization is now the leading source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Field Hockey Earns Conference Win Over Rivier, 5-1

October 19, 2009 Simmons Field Hockey earned their first North Atlantic Conference victory over Rivier College, 5-1, on Saturday. Both teams started the day winless in conference play and with 3 remaining conference games for each team, both needed the victory to give themselves a chance at a playoff berth. With the win, Simmons is now 1-4 in the NAC, while Rivier falls to 0-5 in the NAC.

Tennis Competes at NEWITT

October 19, 2009 Simmons Tennis competed at the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), held at Middlebury College on Friday and Saturday. Despite facing some very strong competition, the Sharks managed to finish the weekend with a 3-3 record. "Overall, the quality of tennis was very high,” said Head Coach Bob Rauseo. “Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.), Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Jordan Borash (Marblehead, Mass.) all played elimination matches and came through with wins. This was some of our best tennis of the season."

Volleyball Splits GNAC Tri-Match

October 19, 2009 Simmons Volleyball hosted Saint Joseph’s Maine and Rivier on Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match. The Sharks pulled out a 3-0 win over the visiting Monks, but fell to the Raiders 3-0. With the split, Simmons improves to 4-3 in the conference, and 10-13 overall.

Soccer Eclipsed by Emmanuel, 4-0

October 19, 2009 Simmons Soccer fell to Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon. The Saints’ Brittany Ridge scored two goals and Amber DiNucci recorded 3 assists to lead Emmanuel to a 4-0 victory over the Sharks. With the loss, the Sharks fall to fourth place in the conference with an 8-5-2 overall record (6-2-2 GNAC), and Emmanuel steps up to second place with a 7-2-1 GNAC record. Emmanuel controlled most of the possession for the match with the Sharks having only glimpses of an attack. Junior Brooke MacKenzie (Mansfield, Mass.), Simmons’ leading scorer, was held to only 3 shots by the Saints defensive line.

Tighe Earns NAC Rookie of the Week

October 14, 2009 Simmons sophomore Katelyn Tighe (Easton, Mass.) has been named Field Hockey Rookie of the Week by the North Atlantic Conference. Tighe’s honor comes after a week in which she scored three goals for the Sharks. Tighe has been working hard to climb back from illness, which kept her out of the first three weeks of the season. Her ability to find the back of the cage during her rookie year is growing.

MacKenzie Named GNAC Player of the Week

October 14, 2009 Simmons junior Brooke MacKenzie (Mansfield, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Soccer Player of the Week, the GNAC announced Monday evening. The honor follows a week in which MacKenzie helped the Sharks to a 2-0 week in the conference. She scored both goals to lift Simmons over Norwich, 2-1. She notched another two goals in Simmons' 5-2 victory over Albertus Magnus a few days later.

October 8, 2009 Junior Brooke MacKenzie (Mansfield, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winning tally in the 87th minute, to help Simmons Soccer defeat Norwich, 2-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match on Wednesday afternoon at Norwich. Tennis Wins Conference Doubleheader, Salmela Earns GNAC Rookie 4th Week in a Row

October 5, 2009 Simmons Tennis swept Albertus Magnus, 9-0, and Emerson College, 8-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday. Both games were rescheduled due to rain earlier in the season. With the win, the Sharks improve to 8-4 overall and a perfect 6-0 GNAC mark. Freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) improved to 4-0 in #1 singles on the week, and earned her fourth GNAC Rookie of the Week honor of the season after defeating three GNAC opponents (JWU, Albertus, Emerson) and a NEWMAC opponent from Mount Holyoke.

Szkolt Named NAC Field Hockey Player of the Week

Crew Takes Silver at Textile River Regatta

October 6, 2009 Simmons Crew opened the fall head racing season on Sunday with a second-place finish in the Women’s Club 8+ at the Textile River Regatta. The race, held in Lowell, Mass., celebrated its 30th anniversary with a record 510 entries and a shortened course due to low water levels in the Merrimack River.

Volleyball Extends GNAC Streak, Defeats Suffolk 3-0

October 2, 2009 Simmons Volleyball swept Thursday evening’s Great Northeast Athletic Conference match vs. Suffolk, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20). With the win, the Sharks improve to 7-9 overall, 2-0 GNAC, and the Rams fall to 2-3 GNAC, 5-7 overall. Only Simmons, Emmanuel an Emerson remain undefeated in the conference at this point in the season, with the Sharks sitting in third place in the standings.

September 30, 2009 Simmons Tennis racked up another Great Northeast Athletic Conference win on Tuesday evening over Johnson and Wales, dropping only #1 doubles to the Wildcats as they sailed to an 8-1 victory. Crew Fall 2009 Preview

September 30, 2009 Simmons Crew will open the fall 2009 season on Sunday, October 4 when the team travels to Lowell, Mass. for the Textile River Regatta. The Sharks closed out a successful spring season in May when the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Novice Eight competed at the ECAC National Invitational Regatta. The Varsity Eight ended the season with an 11th place national ranking among NCAA Division III crews, the highest ranking Simmons has achieved in the 31-year history of the crew program.

Field Hockey Opens NAC Schedule in Maine

September 29, 2009 Simmons Field Hockey traveled to Maine for back-to-back North Atlantic Conference matches, the first conference games of the season for the Sharks. Simmons faced Thomas College on Saturday, and University of Maine – Farmington on Sunday. In both matches, Simmons started out strong, but ultimately fell to the Terriers 3-1, and to the Beavers 3-2. Field Hockey is now 1-8 overall, 0-2 in the NAC.

Volleyball Competes at Ramapo Classic

September 27, 2009 Simmons Volleyball traveled to the 2009 Ramapo Roadrunner Classic in Mahwah, N.J. on Saturday to take on three non-conference teams. The Sharks fell to Baruch College (3-1), Ramapo (3-0), and USMMA (3-1). The Sharks now stand at 6-9 overall, 1-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. “This was one of the last of our non conference games, and we learned a lot about ourselves as individuals as well as a team,” said Head Coach Jason Conetta. “There were a lot of strong performance from numerous players this weekend, however we were missing pieces of the puzzle in key situations.”

September 24, 2009 Simmons traveled to Lasell College on Wednesday night for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game. The Sharks and Lasers endured a scoreless 75 minutes, until Lasell’s Molly Clarke (Berlin, Conn.) made the game-winning goal. Tennis Shines at ITA Regional Championships

September 19, 2009 Simmons Soccer took on the Mount Ida Mustangs in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference win for the Sharks on Saturday. The match ran scoreless until 44 seconds left in the second half, until Freshman Ally Ayotte (Litchfield, N.H.) knocked the ball past the Mount Ida keeper to decide the contest and escape overtime. With the win, Simmons improves to 3-0-1 GNAC and 5-3-1 overall, and Mount Ida falls to 1-3-1 on the season, 0-2 GNAC.

Simmons Athletics to Honor Myles Brand, NCAA President

September 18, 2009 The Simmons College athletics community will observe a moment of silence before Saturday’s home contests to honor the memory of Myles Brand, President of the NCAA from 2003-2009, who passed away on Wednesday at age 67 following a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Sharks Dominate UMD Invitational, Capture Second Place

September 13, 2009 Simmons Volleyball traveled to Dartmouth, Mass. on Friday and Saturday to compete in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational, and finished the weekend with a 3-1 record for the tournament, good for second place behind host UMass Dartmouth. Senior captain Amanda Weaver (Eaton, Ohio) received All-Tournament Team Honors.

Sharks Defeated By Judges, 9-0

September 13, 2009 Simmons Tennis fell to the Brandeis Judges on Sunday, 9-0. In #1 singles, Simmons freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) gave Rachel Rosman plenty of trouble in the first set before Rosman, ranked #41 in the country, won the match 7-6, 6-0.

September 13, 2009 In the consolation game of the 2009 Wellesley Soccer Invitational, Salem State used two first half goals to defeat Simmons, 2-1. The win improves the Vikings to 3-1 while Simmons falls to 3-3-1.

Field Hockey Defeated by the Lyons, 4-1

September 12, 2009 Simmons Field Hockey and Mount Holyoke endured wet weather in the Lyons’ defeat of the Sharks in Boston on Saturday, 4-1. Simmons played an aggressive first half, but was outshot by the Lyons 26-9, and in shots on goal 12-3. The day’s highlight for the Sharks was a Christine Lowery (Wilder, Vt.) goal from a Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) assist just 45 seconds into the second half.

September 12, 2009 Simmons traveled to compete in the Wellesley College Invitational on Saturday, and faced the hosts in the opening round. Wellesley first-year Chelsea-Ann Patry (Warrenton, VA) scored in the 68th minute of play to lead the Blue to a 1-0 win over Simmons.

Panthers Best Sharks, 3-1

September 10, 2009 Simmons Soccer ended their four-game unbeaten streak as they fell to the Plymouth State Panthers on Wednesday evening, 3-1. Seniors Stacy DiSabato and Gianna Minervini combined on a pair of second-half goals to lead the Panthers to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Simmons College, now 3-1-1 overall (1-0-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference).

September 5, 2009 Simmons Volleyball competed in the 2009 Emerson/Wentworth Women’s Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team this weekend. Simmons Takes Conference Opener vs. Pine Manor, 3-0

September 2, 2009 Junior forward Brooke MacKenzie (Mansfield, Mass.) led Simmons Soccer to a 3-0 victory over host Pine Manor in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference season-opener Wednesday afternoon. Volleyball 2009 Season Preview

August 24, 2009 Simmons Volleyball is about to embark on another season under Head Coach Jason Conetta, who in 2008 led the team to its first winning season since 1999, in his second year at the helm of the program. The Sharks closed the season with a 13-11 overall record, and a 6-6 mark in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The Sharks also entered the GNAC postseason with its highest-ever 7th seed ranking.

Tennis 2009 Season Preview

August 24, 2009 Simmons Tennis is poised to begin the 2009 season after a successful 2008 campaign. The Sharks finished 2008 with a 12-6 overall record, and a 9-0 run against Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponents. Simmons captured the 2008 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship for the fourth time in five years, and in doing so qualified for the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The team, led by Head Coach Bob Rauseo, the 2008 GNAC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year, finished the season ranked 25th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the New England region, tying a program high set in 2007.

August 28, 2009 Simmons Volleyball earned the number eight ranking in Great Northeast Athletic Conference preseason voting, the conference office announced on Wednesday. Sharks Earn 2008-09 GNAC Academic All-Conference Honors

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference recognized 501 student-athletes from 15 league sports on the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team. Sharks Pass Skills to Boston Youth

June 1, 2009 When Simmons Lacrosse finished their season, the Sharks athletes put down their books and picked up their sticks to run a lacrosse clinic in conjunction with MetroLacrosse for more than 60 girls on Saturday, May 9. Established in 2000, MetroLacrosse is a non-profit organization in Boston that “uses lacrosse to inspire personal, athletic, and educational success” among more than 700 youth and teens across Boston and Chelsea.

Simmons Softball 2009 Season In Review

May 18, 2009 Simmons Softball ended the 2009 season under first year Head Coach Anne Hennigan with a 16-23 overall record, and a 12-12 record in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The Sharks began the season with a tough spring training schedule in Orlando, Florida, where they tested themselves against nationally ranked teams to prepare for their GNAC competition. After returning to Boston, the Sharks recorded a strong season and continued to gain momentum toward the postseason, where Simmons, seeded eighth, earned a fourth-place finish in the GNAC Tournament after upending #5 seed Norwich and #3 seed Suffolk in the tournament semifinals.

Crew Team Dedicates Bench to Simmons Quad

Simmons Crew athletes, coaches, parents and Department of Athletics staff gathered on the main campus on Tuesday afternoon to unveil and dedicate a bench for the new Simmons quad. Using proceeds from the annual Crew Erg-A-Thon fundraiser, a one day indoor rowing marathon, the team of 37 rowers dedicated the hand-crafted bench as thanks to the Simmons community for last October’s 30 Years of Simmons Crew celebration.

Simmons Crew Eighth at New England Rowing Championships

May 5, 2009 Simmons Crew completed their regular spring racing season at the New England Rowing Championships on Saturday. April 30, 2009 Simmons Soccer hosted team alumnae in a friendly match on Saturday, April 18. The alumnae took to the turf ready to prove they still had what it takes. April 17, 2009 Simmons Softball recorded two wins against Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Johnson and Wales on Friday afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Courteney Collier struck out 15 Wildcat batters on the day, and sophomore Annie Thompson had four home runs. The two sophomores led the Sharks to two victories, 6-2, 7-5. Simmons Rowers Sweep Second at Donahue Cup

April 11, 2009 Simmons Crew traveled to Worcester, Mass. for the second weekend in a row to compete in the Donahue Cup, hosted by WPI and attended by Williams and Connecticut College, along with Simmons. 2008 marked the first year Simmons was invited to compete in the Donahue Cup. Simmons Crew Opens Season on Top

April 4, 2008 Simmons Crew headed to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday for the Clark Invitational, the first regatta of the 2009 spring season. The Sharks rowers found success in the chilly waters of Lake Quinsigamond as both the first varsity and first novice eights, and varsity four won their events.

Softball Wins Three in Weekend GNAC Play

April 4-5, 2009 Simmons Softball took three out of four games in this weekend’s set of Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheaders. The Sharks went 1-1 against Emerson College on Saturday, winning game one 3-2, and dropping game two 8-0 in six innings. The Sharks’ bats came alive on Sunday en route to two conference wins against Albertus Magnus College on Sunday, winning game one 12-0 in five innings, and game two 12-3. First year Ashley Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.) led the charge with two grand slams, one in each game, and 9 RBIs on the day. Junior Sammi Letizio (Windham, N.H.) and sophomore transfer Courteney Collier (Bolton, Mass.) both pitched to propel the Sharks to their 3rd and 4th conference wins. Sharks belted 28 hits on the day and were error-less in the field. The Sharks improve to 6-13 overall, 4-4 GNAC on the weekend.

Novice Eight Triumphs in Sunday Regatta

April 5, 2009 Simmons Crew spent a second day in Worcester, Mass. on Sunday, as they competed in a regatta hosted by WPI, and attended by Mount Holyoke, Bates, and Wellesley. The Sharks battled strong crosswinds and gusts of up to 30mph in the second day of their season debut.

Sharks Softball Splits GNAC Opener with Saints

March 23, 2009 Simmons Softball opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Sunday against Emmanuel College with a doubleheader split. Junior pitcher Sammi Letizio (Windham, N.H.) held Emmanuel to a 1-hitter, striking out seven and walking two to lead the Sharks to a 12-0 game one victory. Simmons dropped the evening game 4-2 to the Saints. Simmons is now 3-10 overall; 1-1 GNAC.

Field Hockey Receives NFHCA Team Academic Award, Nine Athletes Named to Academic Squad

March 17, 2009 Simmons Field Hockey received the NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Team Award for 2008. Nine athletes were also named to the 2008 NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Squad. The Sharks achieved a team GPA of 3.36 in the fall semester, surpassing the 3.0 or higher award requisite. Each athlete named to the Academic Squad earned a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better.

Softball 2009 Season Preview

Simmons Softball returns to the field in 2009 after a strong 2008 performance, in which the Sharks achieved program-best records of 35-12 overall and 21-5 GNAC to finish ranked second in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference after the regular season. The Sharks went on to a third place finish in the GNAC Tournament, and made the program’s first appearance in the ECAC tournament seeded third, and finishing third.

Lacrosse 2009 Season Preview

Simmons Lacrosse, the ninth varsity sport to be added to the Department of Athletics, will begin its inaugural season in spring 2009, led by Head Coach Kate Leonard. Basketball 2008-09 Season In Review

Simmons Basketball finished an impressive and historic 2008-09 season, in which they established a new high for second-most wins in a season with an overall record of 17-8, one shy of the most wins (18), and a Great Northeast Athletic Conference record of 8-4. The Sharks made a tremendous end of the season push, putting together a string of six consecutive victories, including a huge win on the road against Johnson & Wales after trailing by double digits at the half. The Sharks would then go 2-2 over the last 2 weeks of the season to make it to the GNAC Tournament as the sixth seed. Simmons ended their postseason run with a loss to Norwich University in the GNAC Quarterfinals on the road.

Swimming & Diving 2008-09 Season In Review

Simmons Swimming & Diving finished the 2008-09 season with great success in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, and some hard-fought battles outside the conference. The Sharks roster carried five divers, the most in program history, which gave the team a lift in tough dual-meet competition. Simmons ended the season with a GNAC Championship title for the fifth year in a row, and a GNAC meet record in the 1650-yard Freestyle from departing senior Keri-Ann Arsenault (Chester, N.H.), who was also named the GNAC Swimmer of the Year for the second straight season. The Sharks were led by captains Arsenault and Julia Morrison (West Hartford, Conn.) in 2008-09. “These two women did everything right this season and demonstrated great commitment and work ethic, which was mimicked by their teammates,” said Williams, who was named GNAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year by her peers after just one year at the helm of the Simmons program.

Basketball Honored with Two GNAC All-Conference Awards

February 27, 2009 - Simmons Basketball received two post-season accolades from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, the GNAC announced on Thursday. Junior forward Stephanie Fox (West Springfield, Mass.) was selected to the All-Conference First Team, and junior forward Aubree Giarrosso was selected to the All-Conference Sportsmanship Team. Fox is the third player in the program’s history to earn first-team All-GNAC honors (Jacqueline Bolis 2003-04, Kristen Lucek 2005-06).

February 26, 2009 Two Simmons Field Hockey players have been named to the North Atlantic Conference Fall 2008 All-Academic Team. Junior forward Emily Sypher (Orono, Maine) and Junior goalkeeper Jen Szkolt (Bondsville, Mass.) both received the honor. To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached junior academic standing, have competed a minimum two years in their sport with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50.

Freshman Outside Hitter Makes History for Simmons Volleyball

November 13, 2008 After winning the most games in Simmons Volleyball history the Sharks volleyball program has made history yet again. Conference officials announced this week that freshman outside hitter Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and was selected to the All-Conference second team, marking the first time in program history that a player has claimed GNAC Rookie of the Year honors. Sophomore middle hitter Shamika Johnson (Springfield, Mass.) was selected as Simmons’ Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Tennis 2008 Season In Review

November 12, 2008 Simmons Tennis finished the 2008 campaign with an 11-5 overall record, and a 7-0 run against Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponents. The Sharks captured the GNAC Championship for the fourth time in five years. Head Coach Bob Rauseo received GNAC Coach of the Year honors for the third time in four years. Katy Hallinan (Lakeville, Mass.), Maile Macloed (Carlsbad, Calif.), Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) and Stacey Kohan (Milford, Conn.) each received GNAC All-Conference honors at the close of the 2008 season. Simmons is now the 10th-ranked Division III team in Massachusetts, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Volleyball 2008 Season In Review

November 11, 2008 Simmons Volleyball closed out the 2008 season with a 13-11 overall record, and a 6-6 mark in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. This was a complete turnaround for second-year Head Coach Jason Conetta’s Sharks, whose overall record at the close of 2007 was 8-14. Simmons entered the 2008 GNAC tournament as 7th seed, the program’s highest ranking and first winning season since 1999.

November 11, 2008 - The Great Northeast Athletic Conference office released the 2008 All-GNAC first, second, third and Sportsmanship teams on Tuesday with four Sharks earning accolades. Basketball 2008-09 Season Preview

November 11, 2008 Simmons Basketball is gearing up for another season under Head Coach Tony Price, who is beginning his ninth year at the helm of the program. Last season, the Sharks finished in 8th place and qualified for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament, their 6th straight appearance. The team had many new faces and it took time for the team to develop cohesion, which at times resulted in inconsistent play. However, the Sharks made a serious run at the tail end of the season, winning 5 out of their last 7 games to qualify for the postseason. The team hopes to use this strong finish to prepare for 2008.

November 4, 2008 - The Simmons College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision, by scores of 25-10, 25-13 and 25-22 to GNAC front-runner Johnson & Wales at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening in the conference quarterfinals. Crew Competes at the Seven Sisters Regatta, DuBois Named to All-Regatta Team

October 26, 2008 Simmons Crew traveled to the historic Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, PA to take on rival crews from Wellesley, Smith, Mount Holyoke and Bryn Mawr College in the Seven Sisters Regatta on Sunday. The Sharks finished fourth in team points while Mount Holyoke claimed their second consecutive and eighth all-time team championship in the 22nd running of the regatta. Masters Swimming World Records Set at Simmons October Swim Fest

Simmons College Swimming and Diving hosted the inaugural October Swim Fest , a Masters swimming mini-meet, on Saturday, October 18. Masters swimmers ranging from age 20 to 75 descended on the Holmes Sports Center Natatorium for the competition. Many local teams, including Jumbo Aquatics, BC, Wellelsey, Cambridge, ABC Sharks and, of course, Simmons Masters, were in attendance, in addition to swimmers from Maine and New Hampshire.

Tennis Captures Fourth GNAC Tournament Title

October 26, 2008 - The No. 1-seeded Simmons tennis team knocked off third-seeded Johnson and Wales, 6-3, on Sunday evening at the Weymouth Club to claim it’s fourth Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Championship in the last five years.
