Simmons Crew earns top ranking
The Simmons College crew team continued its terrific season over the weekend performing well at Lake Quinsigamond. The race marked the Simmons Crew team's first ever competition in the Donahue Cup invitational regatta in Worcester, MA.
The first novice 8, stroked by freshman Sarah Rockwell, placing 1st beat out Williams College, and Connecticut College, it was clear that being invited to was well deserved. "It was cool being bow seat in such a tight race and crossing the finish line first" comments freshman Shannon Armstrong.
The varsity squad finished with solid results as well, with the varsity 8, stroked by senior Whitney Airgood, placing second only to Williams. Demonstrating the team's positive and constructive attitude, junior Elisabeth Schwartz adds, "Even though Williams was a surprise addition, it was a good opportunity to compete and become stronger". In the fours races, the varsity 4, also stroked by Airgood, brought consistent efforts resulting in 2nd place, making Williams work hard for its 1st place finish.
The novice four, stroked by freshman Amanda Derosa raced solidly as well finishing 3rd. "I feel like it is a really big honor for Simmons to be invited to participate in the Donahue Cup, and it shows how much stronger our team has gotten in the past few years" reflects junior Lauren Searls, who competed in the varsity 8 race.
During this past week the Sharks earned some well deserved recognition from the rest of New England, by claiming the top ranking in the Women's Varsity Four in the New England Rowing Championship Coaches Poll.
Simmons, ranks first out of 29 programs at the current time. The varsity four is comprised of Nicole Gallant, Whitney Airgood, Liz Schwarz, Jen Dubois, and Nicole Richards.
The Sharks are back in action this weekend when they will square off with Brandeis, Lesley, and Wentworth on Saturday.
