Simmons Crew Turns in Solid Effort

The Simmons Crew team raced on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA on Saturday, where they raced Connecticut College, Franklin Pierce, Clark University, and Amherst College. Simmons participated in all five events, and consistently came out on top, placing first in every event. Simmons won first place in the women's' varsity eight event, led by senior Whitney Airgood, and followed by junior Elisabeth Schwarz, senior Nicole Richards, juniors Jennifer Dubois, Rachel Franchi, and Lauren Searls, sophomores Caitlin Uricioli and Julianne Davis; they were coxed by sophomore Nicole Gallant, finishing with a time of 7:11.4. Two of the Simmons novice four squads impressively competed in the women's third varsity four event, Shannon Armstrong, followed by Sara Keyser, Julia Burns, and Melissa Derosa, coxed by Kyle Whitley where after a rocky start pulled it together, winning first in their heat. In the same heat, the novice lightweight four, with freshmen Katie Garland, Amanda Taylor, Kylynn Grenier, and Lisa Batsuki; coxed by Amanda Milad came in third place finishing with a time of 8:48.3. Stroked by freshmen.Simmons' second varsity four boat, which had a solid race in the lead from the beginning, was lead by sophomore Caitlin Urciuoli, junior Elizabeth Pattison and sophomores Julianne Davis and Bridget Huxford; they were coxed by freshman Lauren Johnson. The Simmons' first varsity four, stroked by junior Elisabeth Schwartz, followed by senior Nicole Richards, junior Jennifer Dubois, and senior Whitney Airgood, coxed by sophomore Nicole Gallant, had a victorious row, despite it being their second race of the day. The first novice four, consisting of freshmen Sarah Rockwell, Moira Quinn, Kat Riley and Amanda Derosa, coxed by Amanda Milad. Their race began strong with open water on Connecticut College, and persevered, winning first in the event. Simmons Crew will compete in Worcester next weekend against WPI, Connecticut College and Williams.
