The Simmons College athletics community will observe a moment of silence before Saturday’s home
contests to honor the memory of Myles Brand, President of the NCAA from 2003-2009, who passed away on
Wednesday at age 67 following a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
A champion of academic reform in intercollegiate athletics, Brand leaves behind him a greater
commitment to the values of diversity, gender equity, service and sportsmanship throughout the entire
NCAA organization, and especially among Division III programs.
“The world of intercollegiate athletics has sustained a significant loss with the passing of NCAA
President Myles Brand,” said Simmons Director of Athletics Ali Kantor. “He brought to the
association a very thoughtful perspective from his past positions in higher education as an administrator,
chairman and past College President. He believed that all student athletes should be provided the opportunity
to achieve academic and athletic success. His leadership provided the association membership much needed
reform across large and small college athletic programs so that we can ensure this to be true.”
Simmons Soccer will host Mount Ida College, and Field Hockey will host Wheelock College. Both contests will
begin at 1:00pm on Saturday, September 19, following a moment of silence in honor of Brand.
