Simmons Crew Eighth at New England Rowing Championships

Simmons Crew completed their regular spring racing season at the New England Rowing Championships on
Saturday. The team placed two eights in the grand finals and two in the petite finals to earn enough points
for eighth place out of 24 women’s teams, ahead of rival programs Tufts and Mount Holyoke, as well as
several NCAA Division I programs.
The Second Novice Eight raced to a third-place medal in the Grand Finals, earning Simmons’ only medal
of the day. The crew of Michaela Kachadoorian (cox), Megan Heber (8), Jennifer Lenihan (7), Jill Romano (6),
Taylor Vanderwoude (5), Beth Olney (4), Kathryn Mitchell (3), Annie Tran (2) and Lia Arnzen (1) crossed the
line in 8:02.82, behind first-place University of Vermont (7:42.74) and second-place Wesleyan (8:00.84), and
ahead of Smith (8:10.92) and Holy Cross (8:36.90).
The Novice Eight placed second in their morning heat to Vermont to advance to the afternoon Grand Final. In a
close, hard-fought race, where second through fifth place finished within five seconds of each other, the
lineup of Jess Dowler (cox), Becca Brown (8), Emily Hagens (7), Caitlin Britton (6), Laura Applin (5), Sarah
Herman (4), Kelli Flanagan (3), Diane McKiernan (2) and Mary Lovell (1) finished fifth with a time of
7:34.54, ahead of sixth-place Mount Holyoke (7:36.87) and behind Vermont (7:21.48), Coast Guard (7:29.81),
WPI (7:31.62) and Bates (7:34.54).
The Varsity Eight placed fourth in their morning heat for a trip to the afternoon Petite Finals. In the
final, the Sharks finished sixth with a time of 7:24.01, one second behind Fifth-place Tufts (7:23.10).
Wesleyan won the Petite with a time of 7:13.15, ahead of Vermont (7:18.31), Mount Holyoke (7:19.20) and
Wellesley (7:20.14). The lineup was Nicole Gallant (cox), Amanda Taylor (8), Jennifer DuBois (7), Katherine
Riley (6), Lauren Searls (5), Rachel Franchi (4), Sara Keyser (3), Amanda DeRosa (2) and Melissa DeRosa
(1).
The Second Varsity Eight placed fifth in their morning heat to snag a place in the Petite Finals. The
afternoon race saw a third place finish for the Sharks boat of Amanda Milad (cox), Caitlin Urciuoli (8),
Julianne Davis (7), Julia Burns (6), Moira Quinn (5), Elizabeth Pattison (4), Katie Garland (3), Stephanie
Rubenstein (2) and Alisa Espinal (1). The 2V8 Petite Final was won by University of New Hampshire (7:21.89),
followed by Smith (7:19.55), Simmons (7:21.98) and Mount Holyoke 7:22.83).
In what began as a transition year from fours to eights, the 2008 New England Fours Champions found themselves in the top third with their performances in the eights at New Englands.
The Sharks 1V, 2V and 1N will travel to Cherry Hill, N.J. this weekend to compete in the ECAC National
Invitational Regatta on the Cooper River.
