Simmons Crew Wins Women's Club 8+ at Textile River Regatta

The Simmons Crew varsity women took home the gold for the second year in a row in the Women's Club 8+ event at the Textile River Regatta. The Sharks traveled to Lowell, MA on Sunday for their fall season debut, and placed in the top three in each event they entered.

The Varsity A boat took first place with a time of 21:12.02, ahead of the University of Vermont and Wellesley College, who took second and third. The crew consisted of Amanda Milad (cox), tri-captain Rachel Franchi (8), Liz Schwarz (7), Jen DuBois (6), Lauren Searls (5), Amanda DeRosa (4), Melissa DeRosa (3), Caitlin Urciuoli (2) and Katie Garland (1).

The Varsity B boat finished in 10th place in the same event, with a time of 22:15.50, The lineup was tri-captain Nicolle Gallant (cox), Sarah Rockwell (8), Kat Riley (7), tri-captain Sara Keyser (6), Liz Pattison (5), Moira Quinn (4), Shannon Armstrong (3), Hanna Keily (2) and Lauren Johnson (1).

"After a month of training we were able to see our efforts pay off," said Gallant. "It is amazing to feel the boat pick up with everyone in it working together after three miles of a head race and still a half mile to go."

The Simmons Novice 8+ took home the bronze medal in their race in a time of 24:20.43, finishing behind UMass Amherst and WPI, and ahead of Wellesley College. For the crew of walk-on rowers, it was the first race of their collegiate career. The lineup consisted of Jessica Dowler (cox), Caitlin Britton (8), Mary Lovell (7), Emily Hagens (6), Becca Brown (5), Diane McKiernan (4), Jenn Lenihan (3), Megan Heber (2) and Kelli Flanagan (1).

In their final event of the day, the Sharks sent two entries to compete in the Women's Open 4+. The A lineup of Gallant (cox), Franchi (4), Schwarz (3), DuBois (2) and Searls (1), placed third behind Riverside Boat Club and Community Rowing, and ahead of Colby, Bowdoin and MIT, out of a field of twenty-five entries.

Simmons' second entry in the Open 4+ placed eighth, just forty seconds behind their teammates, and ahead of crews from UMass Amherst, Franklin Pierce and UMass Lowell. The lineup was Milad (cox), A. DeRosa (4), M. DeRosa (3), Amanda Taylor (2) and Corinne Aia (1).

"I am very happy with today's results," said Head Coach Nik Kurmakov. "It's great to have our trophy back for another year."
