Non-Traditional Students (Dix Scholars)

Dorothea Lynde Dix Scholars Program

The Dorothea Lynde Dix Scholars program provides adult women with the opportunity to benefit from the unique combination of liberal arts and sciences, as well as professional study that Simmons undergraduate programs offer. The Dix Scholars program is designed for women who are 24 years or older — beyond the traditional undergraduate age group.

If you’re thinking, "How can I possibly do this?" you are in good company. Many successful Dix students and alumnae once felt overwhelmed at the prospect of going back to school, mastering new technology, and finding the time to study and "be a student" while balancing work, family, and numerous other obligations. The truth is, Dix Scholars — women like you — comprise approximately 25 percent of our undergraduate student body and often attain higher grade point averages than do younger students.

The moment you decide to apply to Simmons, our admission staff is ready to help. We personalize our admission process to fit busy, often complex lives of forward thinking women like you.

Our goal is to help you achieve your personal and professional goals. Here’s what we provide to help you succeed:

  • individual pre-admission counseling
  • application, admission, registration, and orientation procedures geared to the needs of adult learners
  • a rolling admission calendar
  • financial aid
  • Dix Scholarships, awarded to all accepted degree candidates, equivalent to the cost of four undergraduate credits
  • generous transfer credit options (up to 80 credits)
  • full-time or part-time study
  • guaranteed internship, or other career-building form of independent study
  • advising for registered nurses who wish to pursue the Simmons R.N. – B.S. completion program
  • career counseling services
  • academic support
  • credit for prior learning
