Required Courses in the Pre-Med
Program
In order to prepare for the required aptitude tests, which are normally
taken at the end of the junior year if a student wishes to enter
professional school in the year following graduation, students should
plan an academic program that will allow them to complete a minimum
of the following courses by that time:
The Liberal Arts and Sciences
Requirement
The liberal arts and sciences requirement at Simmons will ensure
a broad background for the student. Students are not required to
be science majors to be eligible for admission to medical school
and students should select a major based on their interests. All
students interested in four year medical school programs must however
complete the following course work.
Core Science Requirements
The following courses will satisfy the core science requirements
for medical school, though additional course work in Biology is
recommended for non-science majors. A solid foundation in the sciences
is important preparation for medical school and will contribute
to a strong performance on the Medical College Admission test (MCAT).

Recommended Experiences: |
|
Hospital or Clinical Experiences:
Students may wish to volunteer
time in a hospital setting or arrange internships at one of
the nearby medical facilities. Interested students should
contact Volunteer Offices at neighboring medical institutions
(Brigham & Women's, Beth Israel, Children's Hospital,
Massachusetts General Hospital). Additionally, there is a
Volunteer Department Program at Boston City Hospital where
pre-med students serve as Patient Advocates in the Emergency
Room. In turn each student is mentored by one of the
staff physicians. See Mary Owen, Ph.D., for further information.
Service Experience: Service
to the communtiy through volunter efforts is an important
way to explore individual commitment to working with people.
Study Abroad:
Study abroad is an
enriching experience. Students should plan completion of their
laboratory science courses at Simmons or determine in advance
whether laboratory course work abroad will satisfy departmental
requirements at the College.
Research: Participation
in a scientific research project is encouraged. Science
majors at Simmons typically complete their Senior Independent
Study requirement by working in the research laboratories
of faculty in the Biology, Chemistry and Psychology departments
at the College or in research laboratories at neighboring
medical research facilities.
