Dr. Metallinos-Katsaras' graduate work focused on the study of the effects of undernutrition on behavior and growth in children. She studied the effects of iron deficiency anemia on cognitive development and growth in preschool aged school. Her research interests have continued to be in the area of maternal and child health, with an emphasis on public health nutrition issues and nutrition surveillance. She has collaborated with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control to develop measures to identify groups of children who are at risk for being inactive and to assess the degree of food insecurity among nutritionally at risk families. Studies also include a validation of physical activity survey instrument, and an evaluation of a school-based physical activity and nutrition education program.
