Academic advising for undergraduates is based on the philosophy that advising is an extension of teaching. The advising relationship is a partnership whose aim is to support the student in her efforts to achieve her academic and professional goals.
Each new student is assigned an advisor who is generally from an academic discipline similar to the academic interest of the student. New students who have not selected a major will be assigned an advisor who has particular expertise in advising new students. Advisees meet with their advisers during summer orientation to plan their courses of study. After the semester has begun, students may meet with their advisers to change courses, to discuss academic concerns, and to enroll for the next semester when registration has begun.
Once a student declares a major, she can select an advisor within that department. The advisor will assist with defining academic, personal, and career objectives, selecting a major, registering for courses each semester, and learning to use College resources to her best advantage.
Advisers assist students in planning academic schedules, interpreting
the goals and objectives of a Simmons education, and explaining the
College's degree requirements. Advisers guide students through departmental
requirements while helping them to focus their study. Although students
are responsible for monitoring progress toward fulfilling the College's
degree requirements, faculty advisers are knowledgeable about the requirements
and are also prepared to discuss career and graduate school possibilities.
Certain faculty members in each department are designated to serve as
advisers to students who are interested in academic and professional
graduate study.
