Students with College on the Horizon
For more than a decade, Boston high school students seeking college preparatory support have found a home at the Simmons College Upward Bound Math/Science Program.

Participants receive tutoring and take UBMS classes that develop skills needed on the path to Mathematics and Science-related careers. Engineering, Physics, Geometry, Math, MCAS and SAT Preparation are among the areas taught in UBM/S summer classes and reinforced during the academic year during individual tutoring sessions and enrichment workshops.

In addition to subjects in Math and Science, the program offers instruction in English, English as a Second Language, History and other academic areas students encounter before high school graduation and acceptance into a post-secondary institution. Historically, a high percentage of SCUBM/S alum are admitted into and attend accredited colleges and universities. The program is Federally funded by a grant that serves 50 participants.*

Student Eligibility Requirements:

• Students must be high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to be eligible and must have successfully completed the eighth grade to start the program.
• Students must be either low-income AND/OR first-generation potential college students. First-generation means that neither parent has earned a 4-year post-secondary degree from a college or university. Low-income is defined by federal guidelines as $27,150 for a family of four.
• Students must have maintained a grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.5 or better in their high schools (or middle schools in the case of ninth-graders.)

* The U.S. Department of Education requires that two-thirds of all participants be low-income and potential first-generation college students. The remaining one-third must be low-income or potential first-generation college students
