a legacy of service

Simmons's strong legacy of service is expressed through volunteer activities, course-related fieldwork, clinical experiences, and unique internships. In the past decade, this commitment has perhaps been best reflected in Simmons Community Outreach (SCO), our undergraduate-run community service organization that has become a national model.

Showing the traditional Simmons penchant for leadership, SCO spearheaded the development of a statewide network of college community service organizations, sponsored a conference on service learning for area faculty, and secured seven grants for innovative tutoring in six Boston public schools.

Through these and related efforts nearly half of Simmons undergraduate students participate in community service activities, ranging from education and the environment, to hunger and the homeless. One notable case is America Reads, a national after-school tutoring initiative for elementary students. This Simmons program, entirely student-organized was recognized as one of the city's best.

Service Learning

The Scott/Ross Center for Community Service coordinates community service with academic instruction for Simmons faculty, students, and community-based organizations. In the spring of 2002, the Scott/Ross Center placed approximately 150 students in community organizations to do a semester of service.

Raise the Roof

This spring the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program is partnering with Habitat for Humanity. A team of Simmons students will spend a week building a house, from foundation to rooftop.
