Essays & Studies

For more than seventy years, Essays and Studies has published scholarly articles from undergraduate and graduate students across all schools and disciplines at Simmons College.

Essays and Studies is a selective journal, and submissions are selected for publication by a review board comprised of faculty members from across the college. This year’s issue of Essays and Studies will accept submissions from both traditional and online students of all programs. The journal will also be accepting submissions of photography and visual art for the cover.

The submission deadline for the Fall 2016 edition of Essays and Studies is May 16, 2016. Please see the submission section below for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can online students submit work?

Yes. Essays and Studies accepts papers from all students at Simmons College, including both undergraduates and graduate students, online and traditional students, and students in all five schools.

Should first year students submit?

Essays and Studies is a selective journal, but we are open to reviewing and publishing papers of merit from first-year students.

What happens if my paper is accepted for publication?

The editorial board may or may not ask for revisions of papers before publication. We will need an email that you check over the summer to stay in communication.

Once your paper has been accepted, we will also send you a contributor’s agreement, which gives the college the right to publish your paper in Essays and Studies. Students retain the copyright to their work, and are free to publish their essay in other publications as well. If you have any questions about the publication process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the CAS Dean’s Office or Terry Muller.

What sort of essays has the journal published in previous issues?
Essays and Studies has published papers from a plethora of disciplines, including economics, chemistry, art, music, French, Spanish, sociology, psychology, business administration, children’s literature, and the health sciences. Some previously published titles include:
