Many of our students combine their love of English with their desire to teach — and we help them get out in the field faster with our accelerated dual degree program. Our graduates find rewarding careers in the classroom, and are well positioned for leadership roles as department heads, lead teachers or curriculum coordinators.

Students work simultaneously toward both degrees and complete the program as certified elementary, middle or high school teachers. We make it easier for students to complete both programs by reducing the total course-load by 2 classes. You can also be admitted to both programs by submitting just one combined application.

Program Requirements

The dual degree in teaching and English is a 60-64 credit program consisting of 7 courses in English and 7 courses in teaching, excluding the Pre-practicum/practicum.

Our dual degree students take a reduced course-load of 28 credits (instead of 32) for the English component of the dual degree. The 7 English courses include Contemporary Critical Theory (ENGL 405) and 6 English electives.

The teaching component of the dual degree includes 7 courses and a 4 credit practicum or an 8 credit internship. Completion of the dual degree along with passing scores on the appropriate Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) allow the student to receive initial teaching licensure from Massachusetts at the elementary, middle or high school level.

Full-time students can complete the program in approximately 2 years. Part-time students must complete the program within 6 years of enrollment.
