More than 1,700 Simmons College students received diplomas at the May 20 graduation ceremony, which was highlighted by an emotional tribute to outgoing Simmons President Daniel S. Cheever, Jr. - the recipient of a surprise honorary degree - and a rousing commencement address by activist and playwright Eve Ensler.
Ensler, "The Vagina Monologues" author who also received an honorary degree from Simmons at the event, urged graduates at the Bayside Expo Center to do what they loved and not be swayed by the critics in their lives.
Using the analogy of her childhood diving experiences, in which Ensler said her father constantly criticized her form, the playwright encouraged the graduates to find and focus on their own passion - whatever it may be. "Love jumping higher on the bounce, love going further out, love the flipping, love the entry and the flight. Love the pain when it doesn't work out," Ensler said. "Get back on the board."
Trustee Chair Lucia Luce Quinn, a 1975 Simmons graduate, awarded Cheever with an honorary doctorate in education and humane administration, and announced that more than $3 million had been donated to the school in his honor by faculty, staff, students and alumni. Cheever retires in June after 11 years as the college's president; a portion of the new Simmons library will be named after him.
Susan C. Scrimshaw, who currently is dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, will become president of Simmons in July.
