Service Abroad + Soccer = Changed Lives
It was nothing short of a life-changing experience for Simmons student/athlete Andrea Caldwell, as well as for more than 50 young girls in the Nicaraguan town of San Juan Del Sur. Before attending a recent two-week Simmons College "service-learning" course there, Andrea rounded up donated soccer equipment for the girls - and upon her arrival, hosted soccer clinics for them, in a community that traditionally finds young women on the sidelines as spectators. What followed was more than Andrea could have imagined….The experience is highlighted in the Boston Globe story below. (Andrea is returning to Central America at the end of May on her own to host another soccer clinic, and to play in a match with some of the top female players in Nicaragua).
