National Children’s Literature Conference Brings Internationally Recognized Authors and Illustrators to Simmons College July 24

BOSTON (June 3, 2003) - One of the premier national conferences in children’s literature will bring numerous renowned authors and illustrators to Simmons College July 24-27.

Internationally recognized authors such as Natalie Babbitt and Jack Gantos will join Caldecott, Newbery, Printz, and Boston Globe-Horn Book award winners to discuss the themes of good and evil as they surface in the garden of children’s literature, a garden filled with serpents as well as sweetness.

The conference, "Midnight Gardens," is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at Simmons College, one of the most highly respected graduate programs in children’s literature in the nation, at 300 The Fenway, Boston.

Conference participants include Natalie Babbitt, award-winning author of Tuck Everlasting ; Jack Gantos, author of the Joey Pigza trilogy; An Na, 2002 Printz winner for A Step from Heaven ; Linda Sue Park, 2002 Newbery Medal winner for A Single Shard ; and Trina Schart Hyman, Caldecott Medal winner for Sense Pass King.

Enrollment is limited, but open to the public. The cost is $500 for non-credit or 20 professional development points; $400 each for four or more participants from one school or library system; and $350 for Simmons College graduate school alumni.

The conference will honor the late young adult author Robert Cormier ( The Chocolate War ) by naming the 2003 Robert Cormier Scholar in his memory.
