» press releaseSimmons College Hosts Conference on Human Costs of “U.S. Empire” BOSTON (September 30, 2003) - The human costs of what some call the “U.S. Empire” — war, fear, and racial tensions — will be the focus of a two-day conference at Simmons College Oct. 10-11. “Empire is Not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things: Exploring the Dynamics & Human Costs of the U.S. Empire” will include panel discussions on topics such as “Empire, Race, and Fear,” “Empire & Globalization: Bush vs. Clinton,” and “Empire, War & the Economy.” The conference, held in the third floor conference center at Simmons College, 300 The Fenway, is co-sponsored by American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Simmons Institute for Leadership and Changes, and the Simmons College History Department. A number of experts — such as Gabriel Camacho, president of Massachusetts Labor Council for Latin American Advancement; Joseph Gerson, director of American Friends Service Committee New England Regional Program; and Zia Mian, professor and physicist with the Program on Science and Global Security at the Woodrow Wilson School for Public and International Affairs at Princeton University — will lead the discussions about how the “U.S. Empire” is affecting the global stage. The conference is open to the public, and the cost is $30 per person, $20 for students, and $10 for Simmons students. For more information, or to register, contact the AFSC at 617-661-6130.
