Leap From "Girlfighting" to "Sisterhood" to be Focus of May 8 Conference at Simmons College

BOSTON (April 11, 2002) - The leap from girlfighting to sisterhood and the complexity of girls' relationships will be topics of discussion for women of all ages at a spring networking event and training session of the Girls' Coalition of Greater Boston on Thursday, May 8, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Simmons College third floor conference center, 300 The Fenway. A training entitled "Facilitating the Leap to Sisterhood," geared toward adults who work with girls, will be held 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The entire event is free and open to the public.

Lyn Minkel Brown, chair of the Colby College women's studies department and associate professor of education, will give the keynote address at 4 and at 7 p.m. She will share insights from her highly anticipated book, Girlfighting Betrayal and Rejection Among Girls. Brown is best known for her groundbreaking work, Meeting at the Crossroads: Women's Psychology and Girls' Development, coauthored with Carol Gilligan.

The conference, "From Girlfighting to Sisterhood: Understanding Girls' Relationships and Building Girl Allies," is designed to explore the complexity of girls' relationships, including their competition and aggression toward one another. It will also address the context in which these interactions occur, such as patriarchy, and strategize better ways to help girls and women support rather than undermine each other. The conference is cosponsored by the Girls' Coalition of Greater Boston, the Junior League of Boston, and the Simmons Institute for Leadership and Change.
