Jewish, Christian Women: Modern Quest For Equality BOSTON (April 28, 2003) - Current intense debate about the rights and treatment of women under Islam will be a key topic of discussion among leading scholars Friday, May 2 at the Simmons College international relations Warburg Conference. The conference - Modern Women and Ancient Faiths: the Complex Quest for Equality in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism - will be from 9:00am - 3:30pm in the Conference Center of the Simmons Main Campus building, 300 The Fenway, Boston. It is free and open to the public. While much focus today is about Muslim women's rights under religious law and in secular human rights doctrine, there are similar debates about Judaism and Christianity. The Simmons Warburg Conference will address the quest for women's equality in all three faiths, assessing the current state and the future prospects for each religion. The conference features presentations and debates of religious positions from the traditional conservative to the liberal. Keynote luncheon speaker is Maha Muna, chief advisor to the Governance, Peace and Security division of UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women), which provides financial and technical assistance to programs and strategies that promote women's political, human and economic rights. UNIFEM, created in 1976, today works in more than 100 countries. Program registration is May 2 from 8:30
