» press releaseWomen Technologists Open Eyes of Girls to Technology Careers BOSTON (Feb 20, 2003)—Middle school girls often shy away from technology careers, a field where women are vastly underrepresented. On Saturday, March 8, successful women technologists will introduce more than 100 Boston public middle school girls to a rich array of technology careers. The “Girls Get Connected” conference is from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Simmons College, 300 The Fenway, Boston. Participants will work with women technologists on a number of hands-on projects including meteorology, archeology, hazardous material cleanup, and video and web animation. The conference is in response to studies that indicate that women comprise less than a quarter of the technology workforce, and the concern that future technological advances will occur without the special insights and perspective of women. The event, sponsored by Verizon with support from the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau and Apple Computer, is presented by the Girls Get Connected Collaborative, a joint venture of Simmons College; Boston Public Schools’ TechBoston and School-to-Career; Patriots’ Trail Girl Scouts, Inc.; Roxbury Multiservice Center, United South End Settlements; Center for Women & Enterprise; Dari Associates; Girls Coalition; muscella.com; Private Industry Council; and Women’s Educational and Industrial Union. For more information, contact Diane Hammer at Simmons College at 617-521-2480. Note to reporters, if you want to cover the event, contact Katie Fiermonti in the public relations office at 617-521-2369. Simmons College is a nationally recognized, small, private, predominantly women’s university in the heart of Boston. It offers undergraduate programs for women and graduate programs for woman and men. |
