International Expert on Gender and Global Poverty to Speak February 25th at Simmons College

BOSTON (Feb. 19, 2003) — An international expert in gender, political theory and ethics will speak on the tension between multiculturalism and women’s rights Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. in the third floor conference center at Simmons College, 300 The Fenway. The event is free and open to the public.

Susan Okin, the Marta Sutton Weeks professor of ethics in society and political science professor at Stanford University, will address ways that conventional economic development policy has contributed to the growth and feminization of global poverty. Okin argues that economic policy should instead foster human development—mens’ and women’s actual capabilities, freedoms and functions—and should address the needs of women and the poor.

Okin is the author of Is Multiculturalism Bad for Women?, Justice, Gender, and Family, and Women in Western Political Thought.

Okin is the first of three speakers in the Simmons College Lowell Lecture Series “Gender and Public Policy: Questions for the Twenty-First Century.” The series is presented by the Simmons College Departments of Women’s Studies and Political Science.

Simmons College is a nationally recognized, small, private, predominantly women’s university in the heart of Boston. It has undergraduate programs for women and graduate programs for women and men.
