Simmons Soccer Team Wins GNAC Season Title

BOSTON (October 30, 2003) - The Simmons College soccer team recently won the Great Northeast Atlantic Conference (GNAC) regular season title, compiling a 7-1-1 record. The title is the first since 1996 for the Simmons Sharks. The team is the conference’s top seed in the playoffs, which start Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. at Simmons against Rivier College.

During the regular season, the Sharks outscored their opponents 34-6. They recorded significant victories over five-time defending conference champion Western New England College and Norwich College, and tied Johnson & Wales University.

Leading season scorers included junior Meghan McGoldrick and freshman Nicole Zielinski, who have combined to score 18 of the team’s goals and have scored in every game of the season. Zielinski was twice named GNAC Rookie of the Week.

Throughout the season, contributions were made by the entire team, including seniors Mary Donington, Lesley McShea, Leslie Mitchell, Alia Sullivan, Liz Rothwell, junior Elizabeth Kidde, and sophomores Katie England and Jocelyn Newell.

Fourteen Shark players have scored goals for Simmons this year. Five student-athletes have played in the goal, including Leslie Mitchell, usually a field player, who recorded a win and a loss and received GNAC Honor Roll recognition.

Simmons College is a Division III member of the NCAA, MAIAW and Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Simmons is a nationally recognized, small, private, predominantly women's university in the heart of Boston.
