CGO Project Examines Businesswomen in Latin America

There haven’t been many women at the top of Latin American companies, but GSM Professor Sylvia Maxfield is working to change that. Maxfield is research director of a new project on Women Business Leaders in Latin America, co-sponsored by the GSM'S Center for Gender in Organizations (CGO). The project aims to increase women's leadership in Latin America's business communities.

During the first phase of the project, Maxfield will commission studies in several Latin American nations to explore the challenges and success strategies of women leaders in the corporate sector. The research will attempt to identify factors responsible for the variation in the status of Latin American businesswomen.

In the past, evaluating the roles of Latin American women at different levels of the corporate ladder has been difficult because of poor data. Maxfield is also working to take a census of women employed in the corporate sector in nine Latin American countries. A central goal is to identify the percentage of women at different levels of the corporate workforce. Both sets of research will be presented at a conference in Miami in December 2002.
