Spring Break Alternative "Breaks" with Tradition

Spring Break – a time when students flock to exciting vacation spots like Ft. Lauderdale, Cancun…and York, PA. From March 10-16, fifteen Simmons students and staff will travel to this small Pennsylvania city for an Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program to build houses with Habitat for Humanity. This is Simmons’s first such spring break program.

The ASB program places teams of students in communities to engage in community service and experiential learning. Students perform short-term projects for community agencies and learn about issues such as literacy, poverty, racism, hunger, homelessness, and the environment.

During the week, students will participate in home-building and refurbishing activities including pouring the foundation, raising the walls or roof, hanging drywall, and painting. The group will sleep on the floor of the volunteer center and prepare and share all meals together.

"The Alternative Spring Break will offer students a group-intensive immersion experience in civic engagement, guided reflection led by students and staff, a fun and meaningful spring break, and an alternative to other spring break activities," said Jennifer McKee, director of service learning.
