» press releaseGhana Ambassador to Visit Simmons College Sept. 20 BOSTON (September 13, 2002) - Ghana's new Ambassador to the U.S. Alan J. K. Kyerematen will speak at Simmons College at noon on Friday, Sept. 20 in the Library Browsing Room, 300 The Fenway. The event is free and open to the public. Kyerematen will speak on "Lessons Learned in Ghana: A Study of Sustainable Development," discussing the thriving business and investment opportunities in the African country. Ghana has lived up to the country's newly acquired status as the "Gateway to West Africa" on the economic front and is the frontrunner in rebuilding African economies and for political stability. The City of Boston shares a special relationship with Ghana. In 1999, an order was passed for a sister city relationship between Boston and the twin-city of Sekondi/Takoradi in Ghana, the first of its kind between Boston and any city on the entire continent of Africa. The order was made official in 2001 by Boston Mayor Tom Menino, past City Council President Charles Yancey, and Sekondi-Takoradi Mayor Philip Nkrumah. There is a large Ghanaian population in Boston and New England. The event is part of the Simmons College Warburg Series, named for Joan Warburg of Greenwich, CT, a 1945 Simmons graduate who established the Warburg Chair in International Relations with her husband, James. For more information or to cover the event, contact Katie Fiermonti in the public relations office at 617-521-2369. Simmons College is a nationally recognized, small, private, predominantly women's university in the heart of Boston. It has undergraduate programs for women and graduate programs for women and men. |
