School of Management Dean Named 2002 YMCA Woman Achiever

BOSTON (May 29, 2002) – Simmons College School of Management Dean Patricia O’Brien will be inducted into the 2002 Boston YWCA Academy of Women Achievers at the YWCA’s Women’s Leadership Event June 5.

O’Brien is a leader in the field of management education, especially as it applies to women. The Simmons School of Management (SSM), the only business school in the world specifically designed for women, has received international recognition for its mission of developing women for positions of power and leadership. O’Brien has been dean since 1997. A 1977 graduate of the Simmons MBA program, O’Brien received her doctorate from Harvard Business School and served on that school’s faculty for more than a decade.

The author of numerous cases and articles, O’Brien’s research has focused on the comparative differences in Japanese and American business systems. At Simmons, O’Brien has cultivated the SSM’s Leadership Conference, now in its 23 rd year and recognized as one of the premier women’s events in the country. The day-long conference is devoted to the personal and professional development of women and all proceeds support MBA scholarships to the SSM.

The YWCA Boston’s Academy of Women Achievers was established in 1995 to recognize women who have demonstrated leadership and have reached an exemplary level of achievement in their professional and community lives. Today, with a membership of more than 80 influential women, the Academy works to enhance the mission of the YWCA Boston and strengthen its voice for women, for racial justice, and for change.
