Resiliency During Crisis Examined April 6 at Simmons College
Traumatization After Sept. 11 One of Key Topics Explored

BOSTON (March 22, 2002) — The author of the definitive volume on depression will be the keynote speaker at the Simmons College Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) Alumni Day that examines "Building Resiliency in Times of Crisis: Personal and Community Responses." The event is April 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Simmons College, 300 The Fenway. It is open to the public.

Andrew Solomon, 2001 National Book Award Winner for The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression, will speak at 9:30 a.m. The Noonday Demon is an examination of depression in personal, cultural, and scientific terms.

Other speakers will address resiliency as it applies to a variety of crises, with a particular focus on the events of Sept. 11. Simmons Professor Helen Reinherz and research associate Dina Carbonell will speak on building resilience in young adults; social work clinician Cynthia Pill will explore clinicians’ and clients’ shared experiences of traumatization associated with Sept. 11 and its aftermath; social work clinician Elizabeth Buckley and Simmons lecturer Philip Decter will discuss children, families, and crisis, from isolation to community; Simmons College lecturer Leslie Bass will review strategies and intervention for adult depression; clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist Corky Becker will discuss the Public Conversation Project and the importance of listening to understand; and Gary Bailey, the Simmons GSSW Eva Whiting White Visiting Professor, will discuss Sept. 11 and its impact on social work at the local, state, and national level.
