Ordinary People Awarded for Extraordinary Antiracism Efforts March 3 at Simmons College

BOSTON (Feb. 21, 2002) — Six ordinary individuals and two organizations will be presented with the Drylongso Award for their extraordinary efforts to fight racism at the Community Change Inc.’s 10th Annual Drylongso Awards Celebration Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m. in the Simmons College Conference Center, 300 The Fenway. The event is open to the public and donations are suggested.

The Drylongso Awards were inspired by the book Drylongso: A Self Portrait of Black America, in which author John Langston Gwaltney details the daily struggles of drylongso, or "ordinary African Americans fighting against racism." Community Change Drylongso recipients are chosen from among the many unsung heroes working in their communities.

The 2002 recipients of the award are: Jean Fox, Aid to Incarcerated Mothers; Trinh Nguyen, Boston Women’s Fund; Loretta St. Louie, Cambridge Health Alliance Community Affairs; Juan Tennyson, Harbor Point Community Task Force; Sheila Decter, Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action; Yves-Rose St. Dic, Tufts University, Office of Equal Opportunity; ACE, Alternatives for Community and Environment; and Nia Action Collective, Youth Action for Social Change.
