Feb. 28 at Simmons College BOSTON (Jan. 23, 2002) Charismatic and celebrated authors and activists Mab Segrest and Barbara Smith will draw on two decades of writing and friendship to clarify the challenges of the new century and the political climate since the events of Sept. 11, from the perspective of antiracist feminism. The lecture "Transformation Politics: Turning the Century," will be on Thursday, Feb. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Simmons College Conference Center, 300 The Fenway. A reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public. Mab Segrest, is the author of Memoirs of a Race Traitor; My Mamas Dead Squirrel: Lesbian Essays on Southern Culture; and the soon-to-be published Born to Belonging: Writings on Spirit and Justice. She has been an organizer, writer, and teacher in anti-racist, lesbian and gay feminist, and economic justice movements. Barbara Smith, cofounder and publisher of Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, has published literary and social criticism for more than 20 years. Author of books including The Truth That Never Hurts: Writings on Race, Gender, and Freedom, Smith draws inspiration and passion from her experiences as a black feminist activist. The event is sponsored by the Center for Gender in Organizations at the Simmons Graduate School of Management; the Generation of Excellence Lecture Series of Wheelock College; Simmons College Departments of African American Studies, Sociology, and Womens Studies; Simmons Institute for Leadership and Change; the Simmons Black Student Organization, Feminist Union, Black Administrators, Faculty and Staff, and the Office of Student Life; and the Director of Multicultural Affairs at Simmons. Simmons College is a nationally recognized, small, private, predominantly womens university in the heart of Boston. It offers undergraduate programs for women and graduate programs for women and men. |
