Making Change- Quietly - In The Workplace
Acclaimed Author to Discuss New Book on "Tempered Radicals" Jan. 29 at Simmons Colleges

BOSTON (Jan. 15, 2002) — Debra Meyerson, author of one of the year’s ten best books called a "gem" by the Wall Street Journal, will give a presentation on her book "Tempered Radicals: How People Use Differences to Inspire Change at Work" Tuesday, Jan. 29 at the Simmons Graduate School of Management (GSM). The presentation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the GSM, 409 Commonwealth Ave.

Meyerson, an affiliated faculty member with the GSM’s Center for Gender and Organizations, will speak on the "everyday leadership" of people who act on their values and subtly plant seeds of change within their organizations and succeed. These quiet "change agents" are a crucial source of new ideas, alternative perspectives, and organizational change and learning at their workplace, says Meyerson. Her study took place over 15 years and included interviews with more than 200 people in a wide variety of jobs at three companies.

"There are many people who want to succeed in their organizations, yet want to live by their values or identities, even if they are somehow at odds with the dominant culture of their organizations," says Meyerson. "They want to fit in and they want to retain what makes them different. They want to rock the boat, and they want to stay in it."

Note to reporters: if you’d like to cover the event or interview Meyerson, contact Katie Fiermonti in the public relations office at 617-521-2369.

A national expert on making corporate cultures worker-friendly, Meyerson is also author of "Radical Change, the Quiet Way," and co-author of "A Modest Manifesto for Shattering the Glass Ceiling," both articles in the Harvard Business Review. She has published more than 30 articles and book chapters.
