BOSTON (September 30, 2002) - Simmons College will host a conference Oct. 11-12, that will bring experts together to explore peaceful and just alternatives to the escalating tension in the world since the events of Sept. 11, 2001, with special emphasis on the United States' potential war against Iraq.

The conference, "Paths to a Just and Secure Future: Resisting Washington's Endless War," will be held in the Main College Building at Simmons College, 300 The Fenway. Hours are 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, and 8:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12. Seats are available to the public at $30 on a first-come, first served basis. To register, call 617-661-6130.

The symposium will feature keynote speeches, panels, and workshops to examine the war on terrorism's domestic and international consequences, clarify dangers posed by the war in key regions, and offer models for organizing that prove alternatives to war. Among the participants are:

  • Manning Marable, director of African American Studies at Columbia University, who will speak on "The War on Terrorism and U.S. Hegemony: What Have We Learned?," Oct. 12 at 9:30 a.m.
  • A panel discussion on "Back to the Brink: The Bush Administration, Dangers of Nuclear War and Paths to Nuclear Weapons Abolition," featuring Randall Forsberg, director of the Institute for Defense and Disarmament Studies; and M.V. Ramana, a researcher for Princeton University's Program on Science and Global Security, Oct. 11 at 8:15 p.m.
  • A panel discussion on "The United States 'Global War,'" with emphasis on the Middle East, Central and South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific, Oct. 12 at 10:45 a.m.
