» press releaseEast Asian Studies Program Receives $860K Grant Simmons recently received a four-year grant for $860,000 from the Freeman Foundation’s Undergraduate Asian Studies Funding Initiative. The money will support the expansion of the East Asian Studies Program by improving its curriculum and offering enhanced learning and exchange opportunities to its undergraduate students. Funding priorities include hiring a tenure-track professor, developing new courses, recruiting students from East Asia, and creating scholarships for short-term courses in East Asia. "A new tenure-track faculty member will enable the program to offer new courses and build on the interests of our students," said President Daniel Cheever. "Scholarships for students will create exciting and unique learning opportunities, as well as a total immersion in the culture of various countries in East Asia." Established in 1996, Simmons's East Asian Studies Program offers interdisciplinary majors and minors, Chinese and Japanese language study, and specialized short-term courses in Thailand, China, and Japan. |
