July 26-29 BOSTON (July 5, 2001) Best-selling childrens literature author Daniel Handler (better known as "Lemony Snicket"), who recently had five of his books on the New York Times Top 10 childrens literature bestsellers list behind only J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter series, will join other award-winning authors and illustrators at a national childrens literature conference July 26-29 at Simmons College. The conference, "Brave New Worlds," is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Childrens Literature at Simmons College, one of the most highly respected graduate programs in childrens literature in the nation. Authors and illustrators will explore real-world issues that are just beginning to be addressed in childrens literature. Conference participants include the 2001 Newbery Award winner Richard Peck, renowned author Natalie Babbitt, Christopher Myers, recipient of the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration of Black Cat, and Caldecott Honor medalist for Harlem, and Jack Gantos, 2001 Newbery Honor Medalist. They will explore the future of such issues as class, race, and gender in the changing landscape of literature for young readers. There will be a lecture and reception for two-time Newbery Award winner E.L. Konigsburg, author of the 2001 Silent to the Bone, which probes intricacies of family and friendship. The lecture, free and open to the public, will be at 7:30 p.m. July 27 in the Main College Building. The conference will honor the late young adult author Robert Cormier by naming a Cormier scholar in his memory. For more information, contact Susan Bloom, assistant professor and director of the center, at 617-521-2540. |
