Vietnam Librarians to be Trained Through $500,000 Grant Awarded Simmons College
Henry Luce Foundation Grant to Help Build Information Technology Infrastructure

BOSTON (Jan. 19, 2001)–The Henry Luce Foundation has awarded Simmons College a $500,000 grant to provide masters-level training for librarians from Vietnam, as the country works to build its information technology infrastructure in a rapidly growing global economy.

Under the grant, the Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science will work with leading universities and research institutions in Vietnam to provide masters-level training in library and information science to 18 Vietnamese students. The Luce Foundation has a long-standing commitment to cultural and academic exchanges with Asia.

During the 1990’s, the Simmons library school partnered with Harvard-Yenching Institute to train Vietnamese students, both at Simmons and in Vietnam. The graduates now form the leadership core of library and information scientists in Vietnam; one was instrumental in bringing World Wide Web access and training to the Vietnam National University in Hanoi.

With the growth of the global economy, the need in Vietnam for additional library and information specialists remains intense. The three-year Luce Foundation grant was awarded to help Vietnam build their information technology infrastructure for ultimate full participation in the world community.

The Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science is consistently ranked one of the top in the country. Simmons College, founded in 1899, is a nationally recognized small, private university located in the heart of Boston.
