BOSTON (Oct. 15, 2001)Simmons College announced today it is offering more than $1 million in full scholarships to young women who lost a parent in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Simmons College President Daniel S. Cheever, Jr. said the 12 "Freedom Scholarships" for full tuition will be provided to academically qualified young women who graduate from high school in the spring of 2002, to begin at Simmons in the fall of 2002 for up to four years of undergraduate study. "In this time of national tragedy, every institution and every American needs to think about how we can help the families of the terrorist victims," Cheever said. "This is our way to honor those affected by the attacks, and help them rebuild their lives and make a brighter future. "We hope these scholarships will remind the families of terrorist victims that there is good in the human spirit, and that Americas colleges are ready to support their access to higher education." Simmons College is a nationally recognized, small, private college located in the heart of Boston. It has undergraduate programs for women and graduate programs for women and men. Founded a century ago, Simmons was the first womens college in the nation to offer women liberal arts training and career preparation.
