Alumnae Professor of English Afaa Michael Weaver was the subject, and cover photo, of Poets & Writers magazine's cover story for the November/December issue. Poets & Writers is one of the nation's leading magazines for creative writers. The feature, titled "The Path of Creation," discusses Weaver's nationally respected talent, his life, his career in poetry, and his love of Chinese culture.
The findings of the Simmons School of Social Work's "Family Matters" study, led by Professor Helen Reinherz, were featured on WBZ-AM's Oct. 21 newscast. The Simmons School of Management's ranking in the Aspen Institute's Global Top 100 Schools was featured in Boston Business Journal online, Banker & Tradesman online, KRON-TV online (San Francisco), WAFF-TV online (Huntsville, Ala.), WCNC-TV online (Charlotte, N.C.,) Houston Chronicle online, and AOL Money&Finance.
Simmons's $1 million anonymous gift in support of study-abroad programs has received significant coverage, including WBUR public radio, WBZ-AM, New England Cable News's "New England Business Daily" program, the New England Journal of Higher Education, Boston Business Journal online, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Massachusetts website, Personal Finance News online, and www.massnonprofit.org, the only website devoted exclusively to news and information about the nonprofit sector in Massachusetts.
Catherine Capolupo, director of undergraduate admissions, was interviewed throughout an Oct. 16 New York Post article, titled "Guide to the Big Apple College Fair," about ways students can maximize their college fair experience.
Graduate School of Library and Information Science Dean Michele Cloonan and her husband, Sid Berger, a lecturer and museum administrator, were profiled in the Oct. 21 Boston Sunday Globe. The couple was featured in Sam Allis' column, "The Observer," for their "astonishing paper collection," which may be the nation's largest private collection of decorated papers.
Janie Ward, professor and chair of Africana Studies, was interviewed in an Oct. 17 Boston Globe article about the 100-year anniversary of the gathering of black leaders and activists — including W.E.B. DuBois — at Faneuil Hall. Ward said that Bostonians need to be reminded of the city's black heritage.
Zachary Abuza, chair and professor of political science and international relations, was interviewed in the Oct. 19 issue of The National Interest online, a quarterly journal of international affairs and diplomacy. He discussed the terrorist bombing of a Manila shopping mall, and which group might have been responsible.
The education supplement of the Oct. 21 Boston Sunday Globe, titled "Great Places to Learn," featured Simmons's arts administration program as one of the institutions "that provides students with what they want (and need) to get ahead." The segment quoted director Barbara O'Brien and alumnae Maura Tansley '05 and Ann Petrucceli '01, and included a photo of some of participants at the program's New York Institute.
Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science Lecturer Anita Silvey provided a book "pick of the week" to the Boston Sunday Globe's "Shelf Life" column.
