Simmons's 102nd Commencement received an array of media coverage. On May 19  (graduation day), a story ran on the Associated Press wire service, and an interview with Commencement speaker John Prendergast ran on WBZ-AM (CBS Radio, Boston).  On May 20, a Boston Sunday Globe article focused on Prendergast's address and included photos of Prendergast and student speaker Darline Tunis '07.  And before graduation, the May 16 Boston Metro ran a spotlight on Commencement, including bios of Prendergast and the honorary degree recipients, as well as a map of the campus and "fun facts" about the college.

Coverage about the new partnership between the School of Management (SOM) and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta appeared in several media outlets, both foreign and domestic. The May 17 Economic Times of India described the venture — which is designed to give faculty and women MBA candidates at both schools international business experience while encouraging more women to engage in entrepreneurial activity and advance into leadership positions  — as "a partnership geared to give a leg-up to womanpower."  The partnership also was announced in the May 23 issue of Inc.com, the May 25th edition of New England Cable News' New England Business Day, on the WBZ-AM morning news May 28, and in the June 8 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Bob Coulam, research professor in Health Care Administration, was quoted in a May 30 New York Times article about the Bush administration's use of interrogation techniques in the years since the Sept. 11 attacks. Coulam was one of the specialists commissioned by the Intelligence Science Board to advise the intelligence agencies.

Education and Africana Studies Professor Theresa Perry was quoted in a May 24 Christian Science Monitor article about a native New Yorker who became the first white graduate of a Birmingham, Ala., high school.

Zach Abuza, associate professor of international relations,  was quoted in a June 3 Associated Press article about Thai rebel Muslims' use of beheadings to promote fear. Abuza said that Islamic militants in Southeast Asia are trying to pull that region into the Islamic core as part of their global jihad.

Simmons School for Health Studies Associate Dean Judy Beal was quoted in a May 13 Boston Sunday Globe article about the "Hot Jobs of 2007." Beal discussed job growth in the nursing field and career and salary trends for Simmons nursing graduates.

Simmons College was mentioned in a highly positive May 31 Boston Globe book review of Spelman College President Beverly Tatum's "Can We Talk About Race? And Other Conversations in an Era of School Resegregation" book. The review explains that the book is based on Tatum's essays on race and education originally delivered at Simmons (as part of last year's Simmons College/Beacon Press Race, Education and Democracy Lecture and Book Series).

Roxanne Jackman, assistant director of career counseling, was interviewed in a May 13 Boston Sunday Globe article on how job hunters should read job descriptions. She said that job candidates need to read between the lines when they see certain buzzwords and phrases.

Teresa Nelson, the Simmons School of Management's Elizabeth J. McCandless Professor in Entrepreneurship, was quoted in a May 13 Boston Sunday Globe article about the growth of minority women entrepreneurs. Nelson discussed the findings of a report issued by the Center for Women's Business Research and the Center for Women's Leadership at Babson College.

Sophie Freud, professor emerita of social work, was interviewed by Boston's National Public Radio affiliate WBUR June 4 about her new book, Living in the Shadow of the Freud Family (Greenwood Press, 2007). Freud also discussed how she entered the psychology field by way of social work, including a career as an SSW professor.

Next Step magazine quoted Simmons School of Social Work Associate Dean Carol Bonner in an article about "Majors that Help," in which she discussed social work as a helping profession. Next Step is a college-prep magazine distributed to more than 900,00 high school students nationwide.

Lyndy Johnson,assistant dean of general education, was interviewed in a May 7 Lowell (Mass.) Sun article about the Commonwealth's exodus of teachers due to retirement and the decrease of recruitment efforts for new teachers.

A May 14 Worcester Business Journal (Mass.) article about the salary gap between men and women quoted Deborah Kolb, the Simmons School of Management's Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership. Kolb suggested that women have a clear understanding of their value to a company when they negotiate their salaries.
