» Simmons In The NewsApril 12, 2007The April 1 Boston Sunday Globe featured a photo of President Susan Scrimshaw during her inauguration on March 31. Also visible in the photo, titled "Head of the Class," was Trustee Lucia Luce Quinn of the class of 1975. The March 31 edition of the WBZ-TV morning news announced the inauguration was taking place that afternoon and featured footage of the Simmons campus. Later that day, New England Cable News' Weekend Edition aired footage of the inauguration ceremony.The School of Management (SOM) received several mentions in an April 2007 HR Magazine article about the disproportionate number of women in executive-level HR positions. The article quotes SOM Assistant Professor Mary Shapiro, mentions an article authored by Shapiro, and SOM Professors Cynthia Ingols and Stacy Blake-Beard to be published this summer in the Journal of Career Development. The story also quoted HR executives Helen Drinan, a member of the School of Management class of 1978, and Toni Riccardi of the School of Management class of 1987. Women Studies Professor Jill Taylor was interviewed on the WBZ-TV Boston newscast March 26 during a segment on "vanity sizing," the fashion industry's labeling of women's clothing in smaller sizes, to boost egos and sales. Taylor said such sizing is harmful to a woman's psychological and physical well-being. The March 29 Boston Banner featured a story on "Race, Education and Democracy" lecture and book series speaker James D. Anderson, who spoke at Simmons College March 14 and 15. Africana Studies and Education Professor Janie Ward was quoted in the Baltimore Sun April 1 about helping biracial children learn about their heritage and navigate two cultures. Ward also provided several strategies and tips on raising biracial children. An April 3 New England Cable News (NECN) story on Harvard's highly selective admission policies favorably referenced Simmons College. Two executives from a higher education admissions consulting firm named Simmons among a handful of "increasingly prestigious private schools" attracting students who may have considered Harvard in the past. Zach Abuza, associate professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a March 25 London Sunday Times article about the growing Islamic insurgency in Thailand. He also was interviewed in the March 30 Malaysia Star, Malaysia's most widely-read English-language daily newspaper, about the recent hearing of Jemaah Islamiah member Mohamad Farik Amin Zubair. Additionally, Abuza published a two-part op-ed piece March 20 and 21 in The Nation, Thailand's leading English-language publication about the insurgency in southern Thailand and predictions for future insurgent actions. President Susan Scrimshaw was profiled in the March 28 Boston Metro, as she prepared for her inauguration as Simmons's seventh president. Questioned on the future and benefits of an all-women's college, Scrimshaw said Simmons is "an amazing mix of an all-female undergraduate college, and four of the five graduate schools are co-ed." Assistant Dean of Education, Lyndy Johnson was interviewed on WBZ-AM radio March 23, prior to the national Beginning Teachers Conference co-hosted by Simmons. A March 30 Boston Globe editorial, titled "The Teacher Gap: Prepare Now," noted Simmons's sponsorship of the conference and quoted conference speaker Tom Carroll, president of the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future. WBUR-FM, Boston public radio, featured a lengthy segment about the conference March 27 on its Morning Edition program. |
