» Simmons In The NewsOctober 5, 2006SSW Professor Helen Reinherz's study on the link between adolescent suicidal thoughts and mental illness as adults was mentioned in the August 20 edition of USA Today. The article, "Gen Exers Have Their Hands Full" focused on the pressures and stress faced by teenagers today. Reinherz also was interviewed on WRKO-AM's Boston this Morning program. Zach Abuza, associate professor of international relations, was interviewed in an Aug. 15 Wall Street Journal Online article about the role of the Philippines as a base for Al Qaeda training. Abuza said the cease-fire between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front - a rebel group with ties to the terror group Abu Sayyaf - and the Philippine government is holding because neither side can afford to fight. Lorita Williams, executive director of alumnae/i relations, was highlighted in the Oct. 2006 issue of Essence magazine, in the article "Find Your Own Power!" Williams discussed how she "packaged" her strengths to transition from a senior marketing executive at IBM to her position at Simmons. Former President Daniel Cheever was quoted in an Aug. 31 LATimes.com article about the intricacies of the search process for college presidents. He said it is rare for a candidate to meet all of the demands and qualities of the position. Theresa Perry, professor of education and Africana studies, was interviewed in an Aug. 24 Christian Science Monitor article about the emergence of new school systems in New Orleans, post-Hurricane Katrina. She also was interviewed on WCVB-TV Boston's CityLine public affairs program Sept. 3 to discuss the state of the New Orleans public education system, post-Katrina. Perry spoke about her work with a national coalition of scholars and educators who are helping the city's crippled school system reclaim its authority. The Sept. 14 Boston Globe featured a photograph of President Susan Scrimshaw giving her first Convocation address. Susan also was mentioned (with photo) in an Aug. 13 Boston Sunday Globe article about candidates for college president who "scope out" the school before they accept the position. Assistant Professor of Education Nina Senatore was interviewed Sept. 7 on New York's WAWZ-FM program Johnny Stone in the Morning to discuss back-to-school anxiety. She explained that it's normal for children and their parents to feel worried about the new school year, and discussed ways to help ease those feelings. Deborah Kolb, the SOM Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership was quoted in the September issue of Pink magazine in the article "How Do You Get What You Want? (27 Ways to Get a Raise)." In the article, which references the SOM's recent survey on negotiation, Kolb said that successful women do negotiate for increased salaries and responsibilities, and it pays off for everyone; companies benefit by having employees with higher motivation and lower turnover. SHS Dean Gerry Koocher was interviewed on WFXT-TV Boston Sept. 1 to comment on the recent death of a nine-year-old boy who had contracted the Eastern equine encephalitis virus (Triple E). Koocher gave advice on how parents should talk to their children about the death of another child. Koocher also wrote an op-ed piece in the Aug. 26 Boston Herald about the emotional toll that natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina, take on its victims. Teresa Nelson, SOM Elizabeth J. McCandless Chair in Entrepreneurship, was quoted in the Aug. 13 Boston Sunday Globe about the link between growth in market share and decrease in profits. An Aug. 27 Boston Sunday Globe article addressed the adjustment that fathers must make when their children go off to college, and included quotes from a Simmons administrator and the parent of a Simmons student. Sheila Murphy, dean of student life, said it can be tough for parents to realize their child no longer lives at home, and that during summer orientation she encourages parents to consider how family dynamics will change. Bob Hennigan, parent of sophomore Elizabeth Hennigan, discussed the melancholy feeling he has, now that all four of his children are out of the house. Communications Professor Judith Aronson's photography exhibit "Tactile/Mercantile: Scene One" was highlighted Aug. 12 in the Boston Globe's Arts and Entertainment section and on Boston.com. The writeup focused on her photos of a 1976 Rolling Stones concert. |
